INDIANS EVEN SERIES WITH CAJUNS...April 7, 2001

JONESBORO, Ark. – Lane Stafford's bases-loaded triple highlighted a five-run fifth inning for Arkansas State as the Indians evened the Sun Belt Conference series with Louisiana-Lafayette at a game apiece with a 9-1 victory Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field.

Stafford's triple off Lance Stutes helped the Indians (12-21, 5-6 SBC) break a 13-game losing streak against the Cajuns (21-15, 6-5 SBC) and Tony Arthur made sure it would stand up, tossing a complete game victory to up his mark to 5-5.

"We've tried to do different things and mix up strategy to get them going on Saturdays," said Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux. "We may have to start looking at our starting rotation and mix some things up there."

Cajun starter Brandt Ray escaped trouble in the first inning after Arkansas State loaded the bases. However, Ryan Corrigan's ground ball to Tyler Tiesing at first base ended the threat.

The Indians, though, broke through for a pair of runs in the third. Kent Brunen tripled home Allen Mazzanti and Corrigan blooped a single into short left-center to give Arthur an early 2-0 lead.

Arkansas State added two more runs in the fourth before breaking it open in the fifth.

"We've got to learn to be more consistent at the plate," Robichaux said. "We can't score going away one night and rest on that. We're not competing at the plate day after day. Then, today, we didn't pitch enough either."

The Cajuns, who started a lineup that was hitting .367 against left-handers, managed only six hits off Arthur, who tossed his fifth complete game of the season.

Louisiana-Lafayette picked up its first run in the sixth when Bret Bailey reached on one of ASU second baseman George Sterner's two errors of the day. Two batters later, Bailey scored from second on a wind-blown single by Chase Bundy.

The Cajuns added a pair of runs going away on a two-run, pinch-hit single by Scott Atwood with two outs in the ninth.

"We're in a 4-3 game if our bullpen comes in and throws strikes," Robichaux said. "We've got to throw strikes first. (Arthur) had some good stuff. We just have to learn how to compete at the plate every day."

The series concludes Sunday with a 1 p.m. game. Senior Eric Templet (4-4, 4.22) is scheduled to start for the Cajuns. Arkansas State has yet to name its Sunday starter, though Tommy Goforth (1-6, 5.40) has been mentioned as a probable starter. Templet's start will be the 47th of his career, which will set a school record, surpassing Todd Credeur's 46 career starts.
