THREE-RUN RALLY PROPELS CAJUNS PAST PRIVATEERS ... April 21, 2001 NEW ORLEANS - For six innings, it looked like deja vu all over again for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns, as the same scenario that unfolded in the middle game of last season's series at Privateer Park looked to play itself out again. However, Scott Atwood made sure that would not happen again, delivering a two-run single that broke a 4-all tie and propelled the Cajuns to a 7-4 victory Saturday afternoon. "We never gave up the three-run inning and that's huge in this game," Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux said. "The only thing that worried me was giving them the two runs on the errors early in the game. We did a good job late in the game, getting some bunts down and putting some pressure on the freshman on the mound." For the second straight time, the Cajuns (25-18, 10-7 Sun Belt Conference) jumped out to an early lead against UNO starter Shaylar Hatch (6-4). Bryan Sneed knocked in Neil Simoneaux, who led off the game with a double, with a ground out to second in the first inning and Matt Pavlich followed with a two-run double in the second to stake Eric Templet (6-5) to a 3-0 lead. However, Hatch settled in, blanking the Cajuns through the sixth, during which the Privateers took advantage of four Cajun errors to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Templet scattered six hits in seven innings while striking out eight to pick up his 24th career victory, two away from tying Scott Dohmann for the school record. Of the four runs the Gonzales native allowed, only one was earned. Jordy Templet followed with two scoreless innings to pick up his first collegiate save. "That's important," Robichaux said of Templet's performance." Now we've got Game 2 down and we're going to go with Brandt Ray and challenge him to step up like an older pitcher should and help this ball club, because our hitters are in a good rhythm and we need a pitcher to go out there and set a good rhythm for us." In the seventh, the Cajuns, who lost a 4-3 decision to Hatch last season in New Orleans, finally broke through again against the Privateer right-hander. Brad Saloom led off with a single, but was erased on a fielder's choice. After Doug Vicknair's single put runners on first and second with only one out, Chase Bundy pinch-ran for Pavlich at second. Simoneaux flew out and Rick Haydel followed with an RBI single through the left side that tied the game at 4, drove Hatch from the game and brought Stander into the game. Sneed welcomed Stander with a check-swing single that loaded the bases with two outs. On the first pitch from Stander, Atwood turned on a fastball and slapped it through the left side of the infield, scoring Vicknair from third and Haydel from second with the game-winning runs. "We've been looking for some senior leadership," Robichaux said. "(Friday) night it was Jarvis (Larry) and today Scott (Atwood) came through for us. They've both stepped up since we put them in the lineup." The Cajuns will try to sweep the Privateers in New Orleans for the first time in school history on Sunday when the teams meet in a 1 p.m. single game.
