CAJUNS BATS BACK RAMON IN 9-1 VICTORY OVER SOUTH ALABAMA...April 13, 2001

LAFAYETTE – Friday the 13th brought some surprises to Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns.

Fortunately for them, though, they were of the positive variety.

Scott Atwood, Robert Shelton and Jarvis Larry tagged back-to-back-to-back home runs to break a 1-all tie in the third inning and Tim Ramon returned to his usually stellar self as Louisiana-Lafayette knocked off Sun Belt Conference co-leader South Alabama 9-1 at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field Friday night.

The three home runs were part of a 14-hit attack that helped Ramon (5-1) settle in and toss his second complete-game of the season – a five-hit masterpiece.

"They went out and scored a run in the first inning, but I saw our lineup and I wasn't worried at all," Ramon said. "I was a little rough in the first inning, but that's usually the way my outings go. It's always nice to go out their with runs. When you have a lead, it seems that all of your pitches start falling in and you get in a nice groove."

While Ramon silenced the Jaguar bats, limiting South Alabama (29-9 8-5 Sun Belt) to their lowest hit total of the season, Shelton and the middle of the lineup provided the Cajuns (22-17, 7-6 SBC) with the necessary pop.

With one out in the third, Atwood slammed a towering two-run home run to dead center field off Jaguar starter Tony Neal (5-2) that broke a 1-1 tie.

On the next pitch, Shelton followed with an opposite-field home run, his second of the season that chased Neal.

Sam Smith entered from the Jaguar bullpen and, two pitches into his night, served up a fastball that Jarvis Larry turned on and ricocheted off the scoreboard in left-center field for his first home run of the season and a 5-1 Cajun lead.

"It all started in batting practice," said Shelton, who had his second four-hit performance of the season. "All the hitters got together and we said that we were going to get up there, swing and play gorilla ball tonight. Fortunately, we came through."

Ramon, meanwhile, was rolling right along with the Cajun bats exploded.

During a stretch from the second through the eighth innings, Ramon held the Jaguars hitless, retiring 20 of 23 hitters he faced.

In the ninth, Ramon induced a double-play grounder off the bat of Ryan Mulhern that emptied the bases with two outs. However, the Robstown, Texas, native allowed a single to Scott Calahan and hit Brandon Davis and Shane Scoville to load the bases.

But on the ensuing play, Davis was called out on runner's interference on Josh Touchstone's ground ball to Shelton and third ending the game.

"The weather didn't have anything to do with it (the ninth inning)," said Ramon, who tossed 119 pitches in 85-degree heat. "I love this weather. I can't wait until it hits 100. There's a couple of pitches I should have made, but it all came together at the end."
