ULM OUTLASTS CAJUN BASEBALL IN ELEVEN...March 21, 2001

LAFAYETTE. – Gut-wrenching games between the Universities of Louisiana in Lafayette are becoming commonplace.

For the second consecutive year, it took more than nine innings to decided a winner between the Cajuns and Indians at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. This time, however, visiting ULM awoke from a game-long offensive slumber in the 11th, erupting for six runs that led to a 10-4 victory.

Seven of the first seven Indians who hit in the 11th reached base, six via base hits, which included a double, triple and two-run home run, as the Indians avenged a 6-5, 11-inning loss last year in Lafayette.

After ULM jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, the Cajuns (17-9) took advantage of the first of four Indian errors to even the game as Chad Verret scored on a throwing error by ULM shortstop Matt Benson.

The Indians (16-7) built a 4-1 lead thanks to a single run in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth, however, Louisiana-Lafayette rallied in their half of the sixth.

Bryan Sneed cut the Indian lead to 4-2 with an RBI fielder's choice and two batters later Matt Pavlich delivered an RBI single to slice the Indian lead in half.

After Brad Saloom reached on an Indian error to load the bases, Robert Shelton drew a bases-loaded walk that tied the game.

Gordon O'Brien, the sixth of eighth Cajun pitchers, took the loss after allowing two runs in three innings. Robert Carro, the fifth Indian pitcher of the night, picked up the victory after blanking the Cajuns over the final 2.1 innings.

Louisiana-Lafayette returns to conference play Friday at home against Florida International at 7 p.m.
