CAJUN BASEBALL COMPLETES SWEEP OF HOUSTON BAPTIST...March 10, 2001

LAFAYETTE – Head coach Tony Robichaux said Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team's goal was to win the final seven games of its 10-game homestand.

Mission accomplished.

After rallying for a 4-1 victory in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field, Louisiana-Lafayette returned to its recent potent offensive ways to finish off a three-game sweep of visiting Houston Baptist with a 12-2 mauling in the nightcap.

"These weekends can be dangerous," Robichaux said after his team ripped 15 hits in the second game and finished with 40 hits and 33 runs in the three games. "You can come out really flat and not play up to your potential. You have to be careful and our guys came out and did a good job. We did a good job of pitching when we weren't hitting and when we had the chance to get some big innings we did."

In the opener, Cajun starter Eric Templet and Husky pitcher Rodrigo Miralles locked up in a scoreless duel through 5 1-2 innings before Louisiana-Lafayette (15-7) used a bases loaded hit batter to take a 1-0 lead.

However, HBU (6-14) evened the game at 1 on a wild pitch from Templet, who, despite striking out 12 and allowing only one run in seven innings had to settle for a no decision. With his 12 strikeouts, Templet now has 223 in his career, five away from usurping current HBU pitching coach Xavier Hernandez from third place in the Cajun record books.

After Gordon O'Brien (2-1) wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing a fielder's choice from Tommy Crosby, the Cajuns made sure they took advantage.

Jess Poche delivered the decisive blow in the home half of the eighth, ripping a two-run home run to left field on Miralles' 118th pitch of the game. Robert Shelton, who finished the doubleheader with six hits, added an RBI single to produce the final margin.

"He needs to (become more aggressive)," Robichaux said of the Ole Miss transfer. "He's been a little passive all year. We put him in a passive situation in the nine hole. They won't pitch you tough down there and you'll get a lot of fastballs."

The entire Cajun lineup seemed to see enough fastballs in the nightcap and, when they did, they did not miss, especially in the fifth inning.

Leading 3-0, six straight Louisiana-Lafayette hitters reached base, five via hits, and the Cajuns put the game away with a seven-run frame that was highlighted by a two-run single from Chase Bundy and a two-run triple from Chad Verret.

Jordy Templet (3-0) made sure the lead would stand up, no matter how many runs the Cajuns scored. The freshman turned in a career-long six-inning outing, blanking the Huskies on six hits to help propel Louisiana-Lafayette to its seventh-straight victory.

"When we set the schedule up, we knew it would be tough in February," said Robichaux, whose team has not lost in March. "We wanted to play good people because you can't get better if you don't play good people. Our schedule gave us an opportunity to play some people and get some confidence in the plate. We're starting to get some confidence and that means a lot. Now, we have to take this into a team and a pitcher like we'll see in (Louisiana-)Monroe and Western Kentucky.

"When you have momentum, you can be a very good club. When you don't have it, you can be a bad club and they've done a good job over the last two weekends of gaining momentum."
