MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO BULLDOGS ... Feb. 8, 2001

RUSTON, La. – Gerrod Henderson drilled a three-pointer as time expired in regulation, and Louisiana Tech used that emotion in the overtime period to take an 81-75 win over Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns on Thursday at Thomas Assembly Center.

During the extra period, the Bulldogs (15-8, 8-3 SBC) hit 3-of-5 shots from the field to go with five three throws and held the Cajuns (10-11, 6-5 SBC) to 28.6 percent in winning their fifth straight game and extending Louisiana-Lafayette's losing skid to a season-long four games.

Anthony Johnson led all scorers with 24 points and all rebounders with 11 boards in posting his second straight double-double and the third of his Cajun career. Lonnie Thomas added 20 points, including 17 in the second half, but was unavailable in the overtime period after fouling out with 23 seconds remaining in regulation.

Henderson and Marco Cole each led Louisiana Tech with 22 points, while Zach Johnson came off the bench to pour in 13 points. Marcelle Davis and Antonio Meeking added 10 points apiece.

The Cajuns held a 66-61 lead with only 1:09 remaining when Thomas drilled an inside jumper. After Cole missed a three-pointer for Tech, the Cajuns had the ball with less than 40 seconds remaining but Orlando Butler and Reggie DeGray misfired on an alley-oop attempt.

Davis hit 1-of-2 free throws to cut the lead to 66-62 with 32 seconds remaining. Johnson was fouled with 27 seconds remaining but missed the front end of a one-and-one, allowing Meeking to grab the rebound and then convert a bucket in the lane with only 10 seconds remaining.

After the Cajuns inbounded, Blane Harmon was fouled with 8.2 seconds left but free throw woes continued to strike Louisiana-Lafayette as the Rayne, La., native made only 1-of-2 for a 67-64 Cajun lead.

Travis Lewis was fouled in the Tech backcourt with only 4.8 seconds remaining and, after making the first attempt, intentionally missed the second one. Cajun forward Reggie DeGray grabbed the rebound and was quickly fouled.

DeGray made his first free throw but misfired on the second. Henderson snatched the rebound, raced down the court and nailed an off-balance three-pointer at the horn to send the crowd of 2,789 into hysterics.

In the overtime period, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 76-69 lead in the period's first three minutes, thanks mostly to three-pointers from Cole and Davis. The Cajuns would pull to within 78-75 with 24 seconds remaining, but Tech connected on 3-of-4 free throw attempts in the final 15 seconds to ice the game.

The Cajuns continue their six-day road swing when they meet Sun Belt Conference rival Arkansas-Little Rock at ALLTEL Arena at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
