BASEBALL COMPLETES SWEEP OF TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO...Feb. 4, 2001

LAFAYETTE – In the first two games of the season, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team exemplified the adage "it's someone new every night."

On Sunday, it was everyone, all the time.

The Cajuns used back-to-back four-run frames in the second and third innings and cruised to an 11-5 victory over Texas-San Antonio at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

"It's good to have three runs," said Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux, who saw five of his nine would-be base stealers cut down, including back-to-back attempts in a scoreless fourth inning. "But, we've got to do a better job of getting runners home."

The Cajuns pounded out 14 hits off six Roadrunner pitchers and might have been able to widen the gap between the teams had they been more successful stealing bases.

"It's easier to run in practice than it is in a game because there isn't anyone in the stands," Robichaux said.

However, behind a balanced offense that saw seven players drive home runs, those mistakes quickly became insignificant.

Robichaux said the opening weekend would be used to evaluate numerous players at different positions and he could not have been more correct.

In the series finale, Robichaux employed five pitchers and a total of 18 position players as he continued to search for the right combination.

"We needed to try to play some guys for the first time," the seventh-year Cajun skipper said. "We needed to get some guys some work early, like (Bubba) Olivier and (Lance) Stutes. Now, we need to try to get as many guys playing time as we can next weekend (against Western Illinois)."

A couple of newcomers played key roles in helping the Cajuns sweep their fourth-straight season-opening series.

Junior pitcher Brandt Ray, who missed the entire 2000 season because of arm surgery, did not allow an earned run in his first start to grab his first victory as a Cajun.

Then, after UTSA had used back-to-back two-run innings in the sixth and seventh, North Carolina State transfer Tyler Tiesing swatted a mammoth two-run home run in the eighth to provide the Cajuns with the final margin.

While the newcomers shined, a familiar face helped push the Cajuns to the early lead.

With UTSA starter Bryan Eck (0-1) looking to keep the Roadrunners in striking distance, Simoneaux turned on an Eck fastball and deposited it over the left-field fence for the Cajuns' first home run of the season and a 4-1 lead.

Eck lasted only one more batter, as Matt Pavlich's two-out double drove the Blinn Junior College transfer from the game and the Cajuns opened the floodgates against the weary Roadrunner bullpen.
