ASU NIPS CAJUN MEN'S BASKETBALL IN THRILLER ... Feb. 3, 2001
LAFAYETTE Matt Pruitt drilled 1-of-2 free throws with eight
seconds left, and Louisiana-Lafayette's shot at the buzzer was off the mark as
Arkansas State took an 82-80 win over the Cajuns at the Cajundome on Saturday.
Kolin Weaver led four ASU players in double digits with 19 points,
while Jason Jennings added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Nick Rivers scored 13 points, and
Odie Williams added 11 for the Indians in the winning effort.
Louisiana-Lafayette's Anthony Johnson led all scorers with a
career-best 27 points, while Orlando Butler came off the bench to pour in 17 points with
four 3-pointers. Lonnie Thomas added 12 points and came just one rebound short of posting
his fourth straight double-double.
The game probably shouldn't have been as close at the end as
ASU (14-8, 8-2 SBC) held an 80-73 lead with only 52 seconds remaining. However,
Louisiana-Lafayette took advantage of a Johnson stuff, and Brad Boyd's baseline
three-pointer in a nine-second span to trip that margin to 80-78 with 28 seconds
remaining.
Odie Williams was fouled with 24 seconds left, but made only 1-of-2
free throws. With 13 seconds left, Johnson rebounded his own miss for an 81-80 lead. After
a Cajun timeout, Orlando Butler fouled Pruitt, who made his second free throw, but
Butler's last-second shot was off the mark as the Cajuns dropped their third straight
overall and second straight at the Cajundome.
Louisiana-Lafayette was hampered by an inconsistent effort from the
free throw line, hitting only 20-of-35 attempts from the charity stripe. ASU took
advantage of its trips to the line, hitting 25-of-33 attempts, but could have iced the
game earlier, going 2-of-4 in the final 24 seconds.
The Cajuns overcame their shooting woes from the field, hitting only
33.8 percent, and from the free throw line by outrebounding ASU 47-40, including 26-14 on
the offensive glass. Louisiana-Lafayette's offensive rebound total tied an SBC record
previously set against Texas-Pan American in 1992.
Despite the loss, the Cajuns remain atop the Sun Belt Conference
West Division as Louisiana Tech defeated South Alabama 60-54 and New Mexico State handed
New Orleans a 62-55 loss.
Louisiana-Lafayette now hits the road to play three games in a six
day stretch. That trip starts at 7 p.m. Thursday against Louisiana Tech in Thomas Assembly
Center.
