HUSKERS SWEEP MARDI GRAS BALL...Feb. 25, 2001

LAFAYETTE – Nebraska entered the 2001 Louisiana-Lafayette Mardi Gras Ball presented by Courtesy GMC Trucks in the midst of an early-season roller-coaster ride.

They leave town with on a definite upward swing.

The Cornhuskers (6-3) completed a perfect three-game run through the round-robin event with a nip-and-tuck 8-7 victory over Wichita State in Sunday's first game at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

Matt Hopper went 3-for-4 for the Huskers with a three-run home run and four RBIs, but it was another barrage of singles that finally gave Nebraska enough for the victory.

After Hopper's blast keyed a four-run third inning that gave Nebraska a 5-3 lead, the Shockers (4-2) rallied to gain a 6-5 lead on a two-run throwing error by Josh Hesse. Then, in the sixth inning, the Cornhuskers abandoned the long ball and returned to station-by-station baseball that propelled them to a 6-3 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.

The three-run sixth inning was enough for Jamie Rodrigue (1-1), who worked seven innings in relief of starter Waylon Byers striking out a career-high nine.
