CAJUN MEN'S BASKETBALL WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT AT UNT ...
Feb. 22, 2001
DENTON, Texas Anthony Johnson scored a career-high 33 points to
lead Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun' men's basketball team to a 96-92 win
over Sun Belt Conference rival North Texas at The Super Pit on Thursday.
Johnson, who finished the night 14-of-18 from the field with seven
dunks, also grabbed a personal best 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the year.
Lonnie Thomas added 22 points for the Cajuns, while Orlando Butler came off the bench to
hit 12 points with a pair of three-pointers.
UNT's Chris Davis led all scorers with a career-best 37 points on
14-of-24 shooting. UNT's Jason Miller scored 19 points, while Bryan Lucas scored 10
points and grabbed a team-high 10 points for the Mean Green.
Louisiana-Lafayette (14-12, 9-6 SBC) won its fourth straight and shot a
season-high 56.1 percent from the field, thanks in part to 12 dunks, including seven in
the second half. Meanwhile, the Mean Green dropped its 13th consecutive game to fall to
4-22 overall and 1-14 in the Sun Belt West.
"North Texas played within themselves and were determined that
they were not going to be denied, said head coach Jessie Evans, whose team won its
third straight over North Texas during his tenure. We didn't play as well as we
are capable of playing but we did play 20 minutes of pretty good basketball. And we came
out with a win on the road and that means something.
After taking a one-point advantage into locker room at halftime, the
Cajuns jumped out on a 12-4 run in the second-half's first four minutes and
eventually built a 77-61 lead at the 9:38 mark on Jarret Evans' baseline
three-pointer.
However, UNT chipped away at the lead and used a 15-6 rally late to
pull to within 89-87 on Jerome Roberts' lone three-pointer with 1:36 remaining.
Johnson then made a layup with just over a minute left for a 91-87
Cajun advantage, and Louisiana-Lafayette drilled five of its last eight free throw
attempts in the final 28 seconds to ice the win.
It's the thing that jumps up and bites us all the time.
We're just not making our free throws, Evans said. To be successful and
at the level that we want to be at, you have to make free throws and we did not do
that.
The Cajuns close out the regular season when they face conference rival
New Orleans at 1 p.m. Saturday in Lakefront Arena. A win over the Privateers gives
Louisiana-Lafayette the No. 2 seed entering the Sun Belt Tournament at the Mitchell Center
on March 1-6, while a loss drops the Cajuns to the No. 3 seed.
