LAMAR DOWNS ROAD-WEARY CAJUNS 8-1...Feb. 21, 2001 BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar turned three errors by Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns into six unearned runs and Kyle Stutes made it stand up as the host Cardinals downed Louisiana-Lafayette 8-1 at Vincent-Beck Stadium. After the Cajuns (7-5) loaded the bases against Cardinal starter David Talamantez, Chase Bundy drilled an RBI single through the right side of the infield. However, that would be all the Cajuns could muster as Stutes entered the game and proceeded to record a strike out and a fly out to end the Louisiana-Lafayette threat. "We have to get the momentum in every game," Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Tony Robichaux said. "You don't have to have the momentum for nine innings. They had it for two innings and it was enough. We had a chance to take the lead on the road and get the momentum. That's huge on the road." Then, the Cardinals (11-3) were able to take advantage of the Cajun miscues. A two-out error by the Cajuns in the bottom of the first opened the gates for a four-run first inning that erased the early 1-0 Cajun lead as Wes Cooksey and Jereme Havard each delivered two-run doubles. After the Cardinals chased starter Eric Templet (2-2) in the second inning, Lance Stutes came in and shut down the Lamar offense until the Cardinals scratched out a single run in the sixth and seventh innings. The Cajuns had chances throughout the game, including a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the third inning which ended with Louisiana-Lafayette failing to push any runs across the plate. "On the positive side, we're setting the table," Robichaux said. "We just need someone to come up with a big hit. I thought that Doug (Vicknair) did a good job the other night against Southern with a big double, but we've got to do that on a consistent basis." Louisiana-Lafayette returns home to host the 2001 Mardi Gras Ball presented by Courtesy GMC Trucks at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. The Cajuns will open the tournament with a 7 p.m. game against Wichita State before playing Nebraska at 3 p.m. Saturday and Ohio State in a 4 p.m. Sunday matinee.
