BASEBALL REBOUNDS WITH VICTORY OVER SOUTHERN...Feb. 20, 2001

LAFAYETTE – Last weekend, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns struggled to find key hits in a series sweep at Southern Mississippi.

Tuesday night, the Cajuns made sure that would not be the case when they returned to M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

The Cajuns (7-4) pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of control problems by Southern pitchers as they cruised to a 9-3 victory over the visiting Jaguars.

"We knew we would start a freshman and they would start a freshman," Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Tony Robichaux said. "It was a matter of who could do the best job. Their kid (Freddie Caldwell) did a good job. He made a couple of mistakes and we were able to capitalize on those."

Included among those mistakes were a pair of wild pitches that helped plate the Cajuns' first run in the opening inning. Bret Bailey, who led off the game with a laser-beam single to center, scored as Caldwell's pitch eluded catcher Randy Jones.

While Caldwell struggled, Cajun freshman right-hander Bubba Olivier excelled.

Despite hitting three batters, Olivier (2-0) allowed only a single run, which came on Rickie Weeks' fourth home run of the season, a solo shot leading off the fourth inning.

After Louisiana-Lafayette extended its lead to 6-1 on a two-run double by Doug Vicknair in the fifth, the Jaguars (3-1) responded against freshman left-hander Corey Coles.

Jerel Johnson delivered an RBI single and Marcus Chandler chipped in with an RBI groundout as the Jaguars sliced the lead to 6-3.

However, that would be as close as they would come as Coles and two more relievers combined on the four-hitter.

Then in the eighth, Jess Poche's two-out, two-run double to the right-center field gap gave the Cajuns a 9-3 cushion heading into the final frame.

"I thought they had a chance (to win) when they cut it to 6-3," Robichaux said. "They had our freshman lefty on the hook, scored some runs and did some damage. However, Cory Townsend and Aaron (Welbourne) came in and shut it down and we scored three runs in the eighth. That really hurt them because they had cut it to 6-3 and had some momentum."

The Cajuns continue their mid-week slate with a 7 p.m. contest Wednesday at Lamar.
