LAMBIN, GROS LIFT BASEBALL PAST UCF
Feb. 15, 2001
LAFAYETTE It was a dreary start, both on and off the field, for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team Friday. But the Cajuns made a 180-degree turn late.
Transfer shortstop Chase Lambin went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, and the pitching tandem of Tim Ramon and Andy Gros did the rest as the Cajuns made a successful Moore Field debut with a 6-4 win over Central Florida.
It was a tough beginning for the Cajuns, who drew 1,784 fans despite threatening skies and early rain. Ramon was touched for four runs on six hits in the first two innings.
However, Ramon (1-0) settled down to allow just one hit during the next four frames, and Gros did not allow a hit in three innings of relief as the Cajuns (3-1) won their third game in four outings.
Lambin, who tagged a solo home run in the first inning, started a five-run fourth for the Cajuns with a two-run single to help the hosts overcome an early 4-1 deficit.
Sophomore outfielder Corey Coles, who had six hits during the three-game Astros College Classic last weekend, continued his torrid start with two hits and an RBI. The Lafayette product tied the contest at 4-4 with an RBI single in the fourth. He ended up at third after a UCF error and scored the final run of the frame when Bryan Sneed recorded an RBI groundout.
?After Ramon was given the lead, the senior held UCF (1-4) at bay for two more innings before Gros came in and continued his strong early-season work. The junior struck out four and sat down the first eight batters he faced. After a two-out walk in the ninth, Gros got UCF's Ryan Bear to ground out to short.
?Ty Hanson went 2-for-3 with a run scored to pace the Golden Knights. Clay Timpner hit his first career home run in the second, but UCF tallied just four base runners after the second inning.
?The two teams will continue the three-game series with a 2 p.m. Saturday matchup at Moore Field.
