CAJUN MEN'S BASKETBALL CRUSHES DENVER ... Feb. 15, 2001
LAFAYETTE, La. Four players scored in double digits as
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun men's basketball team rolled to a 100-69 win over
Sun Belt Conference rival Denver on Thursday at the Cajundome.
Anthony Johnson led Louisiana-Lafayette (12-12, 7-6 SBC) with 14
points, including 12 consecutive points for the Cajuns during a 150-second span. Reggie DeGray added a season-high 13 points with nine rebounds, while Kenneth Lawrence added 13
points and a game-high seven assists. Lonnie Thomas added 10 points, as every Cajun scored
at least two points and all but one played at least 10 minutes in the game.
Blane Harmon posted nine points with three 3-pointers and became the
32nd player in Louisiana-Lafayette history to score 1,000 points during his
collegiate career.
B.J. Pratt led Denver (10-14, 5-8 SBC) with 17 points but was held
to only 5-of-17 shooting from the field, while Steve Simmons added 11 points and 10
rebounds in the Pioneers' worst Sun Belt Conference loss ever.
The game was never in doubt as Louisiana-Lafayette raced out to a
15-5 lead in the game's first four-and-a-half minutes and would never lead by fewer
than double digits the rest of the way.
After taking a 50-25 lead into the locker room at the halftime
break, the Cajuns continued to pour it on in the second half, building a 39-point
advantage with 11:20 remaining on Thomas' dunk.
Louisiana-Lafayette blistered the nets for a 48.1 percentage in the
game, including a 19-of-34 effort in the first half, and held the Pioneers to only 38.5
percent in the game, which included a dismal 9-35 performance in the first half.
The Cajuns also took advantage of a 51-37 rebounding advantage as
all but one Louisiana-Lafayette posted at least one board in the game.
Louisiana-Lafayette closes out its 2001 home season at 7:05 p.m.
Saturday when it plays host to Middle Tennessee. Seven Cajun seniors guards Jarret Evans, Billy Jones, Blane Harmon, Orlando Butler, forwards Lonnie Thomas and Reggie DeGray
and center Brett Smith will be recognized prior to tipoff for their hard work and
dedication through the years.
In addition, fans can welcome Baltimore Raven wide receiver and
Super Bowl champion Brandon Stokley back to Cajun country in special ceremonies at
halftime.
