CAJUN MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT NMSU ... Feb. 1, 2001

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Lonnie Thomas posted his third consecutive double-double, but it would not be enough as New Mexico State took an 87-80 decision over Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns on Thursday at the Pan American Center.

Thomas posted 17 points and a game-high 15 rebounds to lead the Cajuns to record three straight double-doubles for the first time in his career.

NMSU had four starters in double digits with Eric Channing leading all players with 25 points, thanks to 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Brandon Mason added 17 points, while Emanuel Dildy and James Moore contributed with 14 points apiece.

With the loss, the Cajuns fall into a three-way tie atop the Sun Belt Conference West Division with New Orleans and South Alabama, a 65-61 winner over Denver on Thursday. NMSU also avenges a 66-65 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette earlier this season in the Cajundome.

Despite outshooting the Aggies 52.5 percent to 45.3 percent in the contest, the Cajuns lost the rebounding war 38-31 with NMSU grabbing 17 offensive boards.

Freshman guard Brad Boyd, making his first collegiate start for the Cajuns, added 13 points with three 3-pointers, while Blane Harmon added 12 points on four treys. Anthony Johnson came off the bench to tally 10 points.

After falling behind 40-32 at halftime, Louisiana-Lafayette eventually pulled to within 69-67 at the 5:59 mark when Blane Harmon connected on a three-pointer. However, NMSU took off on a 12-3 run over the next 2:37 and capped the scoring when Channing buried a jumper at the 3:21 mark for an 81-70 Aggie lead.

The Cajuns would chip away at the lead and got the score to 83-77, but NMSU hit 4-of-6 free throws in the waning moments to ice the win.

The Cajuns now return home to play host to Arkansas State at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in the Cajundome. ASU (13-8, 7-2 SBC East) was an 82-66 winner over New Orleans on Wednesday.
