CAJUNS BEGIN HOMESTAND WITH WIN OVER BIRMINGHAM SOUTHERN...Dec. 9, 2001
Louisiana-Lafayette junior forward
Anthony Johnson recorded his second double-double of the season, and the Cajuns put four scorers in double figures en route to an 84-72 win over Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon at the Cajundome.
Junior point guard
Kenneth Lawrence had a season-high 13 points and dished out seven assists,
Antoine Landry recorded a season-best 11 points and
Darryl Robins had 10 as the Cajuns (3-3) got their second win in three tries at home.
The efforts were nearly overshadowed by BSC guard T.R. Reed. The Mobile, Ala., senior had career-highs in points (26), rebounds (13) and 3-point field goals (5) despite the Panthers (2-6) losing their sixth contest in seven outings. BSC also got 18 points from fellow senior guard Rashard Willie.
The game, played early Sunday because of a later hockey game at the Cajundome, saw the Cajuns race out to a 10-point halftime advantage thanks to some hot shooting.
After Willie tied the game at 16-16 with a free throw, the Cajuns went on a 13-0 run over a five-minute stretch to get the lead to double figures. BSC came back to cut the margin to 36-31 with just over a minute to play in the half.
But a
Robert Jupiter trey and a steal and layup by Lawrence gave the Cajuns a double-figure advantage keyed by the squad's 56 percent shooting touch.
The Cajuns never let the lead slip under 10 after the 18:19 mark and got it up to as many as 21 midway through the half.
