SHOOTING WOES COST CAJUNS IN LOSS AT LSU

Dec. 4, 2001

Louisiana-Lafayette shot a miserable 31 percent from the field while LSU hit at a 51 percent clip as the Tigers cruised to an 83-65 win at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Tuesday night.

Ronald Dupree scored a career-high 29 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had six assists as the Tigers won their seventh game in eight outings.

Collis Temple III had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while point guard Torris Bright tallied 14 points on 3-of-4 3-point shooting. Bright actually made two less treys than the Cajuns, who attempted 24 shots behind the arc.

Junior forward Anthony Johnson led the Cajuns with 19 points and nine rebounds. Freshman center Michael Southall contributed 11 points, all in the first half, and Laurie Bridges chipped in 10 points and seven boards.

LSU jumped out to a 10-point advantage in the first 10 minutes, as Louisiana-Lafayette struggled to find a rhythm.

However, the visitors got the margin down to seven with 3:22 left. But LSU showed signs of things to come with a 12-1 run to finish the half and take a 45-27 lead to the locker room.

Louisiana-Lafayette trailed by as many as 20 in the second half but somehow battled back to within 10 despite continuing its ice-cold shooting efforts.

LSU, though, never let the lead get under 10, closing the Cajuns out with an 8-1 spurt over a two-minute stretch in the final minutes.

Despite cutting into the margin a few times, thanks largely to 23 LSU turnovers, the Cajuns shot just 28.9 percent in the second half.

The game marked the first meeting between the in-state rivals since 1945.
