CAJUN MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO SOUTH ALABAMA ... Jan. 27, 2001 LAFAYETTE - Lonnie Thomas posted his second straight double-double but it would not be enough as South Alabama avenged an earlier loss this season with a 58-55 victory over Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns on Saturday at the Cajundome. Ravonte Dantzler and Demetrice Williams each posted 13 points to lead the Jaguars in a defensive battle for both teams in the game, which saw 46 turnovers and 47 personal fouls combined. Thomas led all scorers with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, and Anthony Johnson added 14 points for Louisiana-Lafayette in the losing effort. Despite the loss, Louisiana-Lafayette (10-8, 6-2 SBC) maintains lead in the Sun Belt Conference West Division but sees that advantage slip to only one game over USA and New Orleans, a 69-56 winner over Middle Tennessee. USA (14-7, 5-3 SBC) held a 37-30 lead at halftime and built that advantage up to 12 points when Williams tipped in his own missed shot at the 15:54 mark. However, Louisiana-Lafayette would embark on an 18-6 run over the next 9:43 and tied the game at 51-51 when Reggie DeGray made one of two free throws. Williams put the Jaguars back on top with a driving jumper along the baseline but DeGray tied the score again seconds later after dunking a deep inbounds pass from Blane Harmon. However those would be the last points the Cajuns would score over the next 3:11, a critical span during which the Jaguars built a 57-53 lead on a Henry Williams baseline jumper and two free throws from Virgil Stanescu. Thomas brought Louisiana-Lafayette to within two points at 57-55 on a powerful dunk with two minutes remaining, and the Cajuns had a chance to tie when Emmett Thomas missed consecutive free throws with 1:38 remaining. However, Kenneth Lawrence's pass was picked off by USA. Dantzler gave the Cajuns new life when turned the ball over with 32 seconds but with only seven seconds left on the clock, DeGray's jumper in the lane was off the mark and Demetrice Williams grabbed the rebound before being fouled. Louisiana-Lafayette had one last chance when Demetrice Williams' made one of two free throws for a 58-55 lead, but Lawrence's desperation three-pointer at the horn missed. The Cajuns continue their Sun Belt Conference schedule when they travel west to meet New Mexico State at 8:05 p.m. Thursday in Las Cruces, N.M.
