CAJUN BASKETBALL WINS SECOND STRAIGHT ... Jan. 13, 2001

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun guard Orlando Butler worked out of an offensive slump Saturday night at the Cajundome, scoring a season-high 21 points, in leading the Cajuns to a 67-61 win over Sun Belt Conference rival Florida International.

Butler, who had scored in double digits only once in his previous seven games, went 8-of-15 from the field to help lead Louisiana-Lafayette (7-6, 4-1 SBC) to its third straight victory over FIU and its perch over the .500 mark.

Besides Butler, the Cajuns also received 16 points from guard Blane Harmon. And although the Cajuns had only two players in double digits, the Louisiana-Lafayette bench outscored the FIU reserves 32-5.

FIU's Carlos Arroyo scored 20 points, the seventh time in the last eight games that he has reached that total, to lead the Golden Panthers. Karel Rosario added 18 points with Haven Jackson chipping in 12 points. After jumping out to a 37-31 lead at intermission, the Cajuns built their advantage to 13 points at 55-42 on Butler's dunk after an FIU turnover with 10:22 remaining.

However, the Golden Panthers would not go away lightly, embarking on a 15-4 run over the next 5:07, to cut the Cajun deficit to 59-57. Arroyo highlighted the rally with four free throws and a driving jumper in the lane that made the score 59-57 with 4:13 left.

However, that would be as close as FIU (3-13, 1-4 SBC) would get for the rest of the night. Butler made 1-of-2 free throws, Reggie DeGray nailed a driving jumper with an FIU defender all over him and Harmon buried a 20-foot jumper at the top of the key for a 65-57 lead with 1:44 remaining in the game.

Louisiana-Lafayette wraps up its season-long homestand when it faces Texas-Pan American in a non-conference tilt at 7:05 p.m. Monday in the Cajundome.
