CAJUN BASKETBALL SLIPS PAST NMSU IN THRILLER ... Jan. 11, 2001 LAFAYETTE – New Mexico State blistered the nets in the second half but, in the end, missed when it needed the shots the most as Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns took a 66-65 win over the Aggies at the Cajundome on Thursday in Sun Belt Conference play . After hitting 75 percent of their 20 field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes, the Aggies (5-10, 1-2 SBC West) had two shots with less than five seconds remaining but were unable to connect. NMSU missed its first shot of the second half but proceeded to drill its next 15 attempts. However, that touch left the Aggies with four minutes remaining as NMSU missed its last four attempts. Lonnie Thomas led the Cajun offense with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting with Blane Harmon adding 16 points, including a Cajun single-game season-high four 3-pointers. Emanuel Dildy led NMSU with 20 points and connected of 4-of-5 attempts from behind the three-point arc. James Moore added 18 points, while Eric Channing chipped in with 12 points. Trailing 62-58 with only 4:48 remaining in the game, the Cajuns (6-6, 3-1, SBC West) pulled to within one point on Brad Boyd's 22-foot trey only 18 seconds later. The two teams then traded free throws, but Lonnie Thomas' jumper in the lane with 2:38 left gave the Cajuns a 64-63 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish the rest of the way. However, the Aggies refused to go away. Dildy hit two free throws with 58 seconds remaining to pull to within 66-65 and regained possession with only 22 seconds left after Moore stole a Cajun pass. With the shot clock off, Channing missed a jumper with only five seconds left. Dildy snared the rebound and threw up a three-point attempt, but the shot was off the mark as the final horn sounded. Things appeared to be all Cajuns in the first as Louisiana-Lafayette built a 16-4 advantage that sent the Cajundome crowd of 3,636 to its feet. Louisiana-Lafayette would eventually take a 34-22 lead into the locker room at the halftime break. But NMSU opened the second period on a 12-2 run to pull to within 36-34 at the 15:25 mark on Dildy's driving jumper. Louisiana-Lafayette could never build more than a five-point advantage from there, and the Aggies took their first lead of the contest midway through the half when Dennis Trammell converted a Dildy steal into a 49-47 advantage. The lead would change hands three more times from there, but Dildy's fourth and final three-pointer at the 4:48 mark gave the Aggies a 62-58 lead for their largest advantage of the game. The Cajuns won't get much rest as they prepare to play host to Florida International in a 7:05 p.m. game Saturday at the Cajundome. That game will be televised live on College Sports Southeast.
