CAJUN BASEBALL WINS FIRST EVER SERIES AT SOUTH ALABAMA ...May 7, 2000 MOBILE, Ala. – For the second straight game, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team jumped out to a huge lead and then held off a late rally in taking a 12-7 victory over South Alabama on Sunday at Eddie Stanky Field.

Louisiana-Lafayette (39-12, 20-7 SBC) jumped out to a 10-1 lead after five-and-a-half innings before South Alabama struck for six runs in the bottom of the sixth. However, Cajun reliever Andy Gros doused the Jaguar offense, throwing 3.1 shutout innings to record his first collegiate save.

“He just buckled it down for us. As a freshman at South Alabama, you can can't give him any more credit,” Robichaux said. “How big is that to come in here as a freshman in a place that has been so unkind to us?”

The win gave the Cajuns their first-ever series victory in Mobile and was only their fifth win in 32 games in Alabama.

“It's been a very tough place to win, but we got two out of three. I really felt the more we saw live pitching, the better we would hit and we did. I think the team did a great job and extended some innings and got some big hits. I thought we did a great job of answering.”

On Saturday, the Cajuns went ahead 11-1 after four-and-a-half innings and held off the Jaguars in a 12-8 victory.

For the second straight game, Louisiana-Lafayette rapped out 14 hits in the game. Tommy Clark and Nathan Nelson each led the attack, going 3-for-5 with two runs. Clark also joined Danny Massiatte and Scott Atwood for the team lead with two RBIs each.

Cajun starter Nick Webb took advantage of the Cajuns' offensive outburst to pick up the win and improve to 6-1. The Houston native gave up six hits and seven runs with three strikeouts before being chased in the sixth after giving up six runs but only four were earned.

Louisiana-Lafayette jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Scott Atwood provided the big blow with a two-run home run, and Massiatte added a two-RBI double for the early Cajun lead.

After USA struck for a run in the fourth on Kyle Stanky's leadoff home run, the Cajuns answered with two more runs on RBI-singles from Clark and Bret Bailey.

In the sixth, Louisiana-Lafayette looked like it had taken control of the game with four more runs, thanks to a wild pitch and two USA infield errors.

However, the Jaguars rallied with six runs in the bottom of the frame. Tim Merritt blasted a two-run home run, Brian Groom added an RBI-single and Dwayne Pugh added a sacrifice fly before Gros entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs and Louisiana-Lafayette leading 10-5. After giving up a two-RBI single that made the score 10-7, the freshman southpaw struck out Tim Merritt and then put the clamps on the Jaguar offense the rest of the day.

The Cajuns struck for two insurance runs when Clark blasted a triple to score Nathan Nelson and then scored on a wild pitch from Tim Davis for the final margin of victory.
