CAJUN BASEBALL DROPS FIFTH STRAIGHT AT WICHITA STATE ... April 18, 2000

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first three innings and never looked back in taking a 6-0 win over Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday at Eck Field.

WSU starter Brandon Sloan struck out six while scattering seven hits in eight shutout innings to improve to 5-4. The Shockers join Florida International as the only teams to shutout the Cajuns this season.

Cajun starter Eric Templet gave up only six hits in 6.2 innings but allowed five walks - three of which came around to score - in falling to 6-2.

With the loss, the 16th-ranked Cajuns (30-9) dropped their fifth straight and seventh in their last eight games. Danny Massiatte led the Cajun offensive attack by going 2-for-4. Koyie Hill and Brad Wright each rapped out two hits with three RBIs to lead the Shockers who posted eight hits in the game.

The Shockers (26-10) took the early lead on a two-run homer by Hill in the first inning.

Cajun starter Eric Templet walked three batters to load the bases in the third inning with one out and seemed to grab the momentum after striking out Pat Magness, the Shockers' leading hitter with 11 home runs and 50 RBIs entering the game. But Wright delivered a single through the right side to score two and give WSU a 4-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Cajuns appeared to threaten with runners on first and third and only one out, thanks to singles from Danny Massiatte and Will Hawkins. But Sloan picked Hawkins off first base and then struck out Tommy Clark to end the rally.

One inning later, back-to-back walks to Scott Atwood and Rick Haydel put runners on first and second with no outs. But Sloan forced Steven Feehan into a third to first double play - the third of four twin killings in the game for the Shockers - and then used one more groundout to end the inning.

WSU added two more runs in the seventh on RBI-singles from Hill and Wright.

The two teams will close out the series with a 7 p.m. game at Eck Field on Wednesday as the Cajuns wrap up their week-long road trip. Louisiana-Lafayette returns home on Thursday afternoon as it prepares to host Sun Belt Conference rival Western Kentucky in a three-game series, starting at 7 p.m. Friday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
