CAJUNS ADVANCE TO SBC SEMIFINALS ... March 5, 2000
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- After struggling to only 13 first-half points,
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns exploded in the second half on the way to a 55-35 win over New
Orleans in the quarterfinals of the TCBY Sun Belt Conference Tournament at Alltel Arena on
Sunday.
With the win, the Cajuns (23-8) face Louisiana Tech in a 6 p.m. game
Monday with the winner of that contest advancing to the championship game on Tuesday. Tech
was an 84-77 winner over Arkansas State in the first game of the day.
UL Lafayette limited the Privateers (11-18) to 36 percent shooting from
the field as well as only 35 points, the fewest points in an SBC Tournament game since
South Alabama posted 20 points against UNO in 1978.
The Cajuns managed only 13 points in the first 20 minutes on 16 percent
shooting and scored only two field goals in the first
half's final 15 minutes.
Fortunately, the second half proved to be another story. After falling
behind 17-16 on Rickie Marlowe's free throw at the 17:18 mark, the Cajuns took off on a
12-0 run over the next 4:53 to turn a one-point deficit into a comfortable 11-point lead.
Junior guard Orlando Butler highlighted the Cajuns rally with eight
straight points, including two 3-pointers. The Houma native came off the bench to top UL
Lafayette with 14 second-half points and four treys.
The Privateers kept the game fairly close and actually pulled to within
five points at 36-31 with 5:11 remaining, but the Cajuns took off on another 19-4 run over
the remainder of the game to slam the door shut.
Blane Harmon posted 13 points for the Cajuns with three 3-pointers,
while Billy Jones added 11 points with three treys of his own. Although the Cajuns hit
only 16-of-45 shots, they were much better from long range, drilling 11 of 22 three-point
attempts.
Tory Walker's 10-point effort led the Privateers.
The Cajuns also tie the 1983-84 team for the fifth-most win in school
history.
