CAJUN BASEBALL SWEEPS WEEKEND SERIES WITH SHSU...Feb. 6, 2000

LAFAYETTE -- Louisiana's Ragin Cajun baseball team rolled over Sam Houston 9-4 Sunday as their bats exploded with two first inning homeruns, which wrapped up their home opening series of the 2000 season.

The Cajun's offensive production was much the same as Saturday's performance, led by sophomore shortstop Neil Simoneaux's first inning homerun which sparked a three-run inning for the Cajuns. Junior designated hitter Scott Atwood also homered in the first inning plating Will Hawkins to bring the Cajuns season homerun tally to five.

"Scott is a homerun guy, he is supposed to hit homeruns," Head coach Tony Robichaux said. "For freshman it sometimes takes time for them to come into their own. Anything that Neil does is not going to surprise me."

Junior left-handed pitcher Nick Webb started the game for the Cajuns, and helped guide them to their victory with six strikeouts and allowing only two Bobcat hitters across the plate. In six innings of work Webb faced 22 Bobcats and walked only one.

Robichaux credits the victory to the entire team's efforts on defense, but especially the Cajun hitters.

"We knew going into this season that we had a great opportunity to have a good hitting ball club," Robichaux said. "Over the years we were not able to have all of our hitters on the same page. This club has the ability to be on the same page as our hitting system. It will make us better now that our pitchers are pitching according to a system and our position players are hitting according to a system."

The Cajuns brought in sophomore right-hander Gordon O'Brien in the top half of the seventh inning, in which he struck out three Bobcat hitters and gave up only one walk.

A familiar face to the outfield, senior Ryan Gill was then brought in at the beginning of the eighth inning to close the door on the Bobcats. In two innings of work Gill faced nine hitters, striking out two and giving up only two runs on one hit.

The losing pitcher for Sam Houston was Howard Pence, was pulled by Sam Houston head coach John Skeeter after three innings of work after giving up four runs off six hits.
