CAJUNS DROP SECOND STRAIGHT AT SOUTH ALABAMA ... Feb. 24, 2000

MOBILE, Ala. -- South Alabama used a 12-2 run midway through the second half to turn a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead and then took advantage of its trips to the free throw line on the way to a 71-58 win Thursday over Louisiana's Ragin Cajuns at the Mitchell Center. USA becomes the only SBC team this season to sweep the Cajuns in regular-season play after taking a 69-65 win on Feb. 3 in Lafayette. It also marks the Cajuns first back-to-back losses since falling to Pepperdine and Virginia Tech during the final two days of the San Juan Shootout on Dec. 21-22. With the loss, UL Lafayette can no longer claim the SBC title outright. However if the Cajuns knock off New Orleans on Saturday night, they will share the championship with the winner of the USA-Louisiana Tech game. UL Lafayette (21-8, 12-3 SBC) entered the locker room trailing 25-23 at the halftime break but took a 39-37 lead at the 10:30 mark on Orlando Butler's three-pointer. Butler would go on to lead the Cajuns with 14 points, all in the second half. However, that's when USA took off. Dusty Dubbs' jumper 28 seconds later tied the game at 39 and Virgil Stanescu's basket at the 8:30 mark gave the Jaguars (17-9, 12-3) a lead they would never relinquish. After three straight USA free throws, UL Lafayette cut the lead back to 43-41 at the 7:56 mark on Blane Harmon's jumper. But USA scored the next six points on baskets by Stanescu and Michael Stewart and two more free throws from Ericson Beck. The Jaguars then took full advantage of their trips to the free throw line late in the game, going 12-for-14 over the final 12:23. USA finished the game 25-of-37 from the charity stripe and was 20-of-27 in the second half. Ravonte Danztler led all scorers with 17 points, while Michael Stewart topped the Jaguars with 13 rebouns. Dubbs, Stanescu and Demetrice Williams all posted 10 points apiece. Harmon and Lonnie Thomas added 1 points to lead the Cajun offense which managed to shoot only 37 percent from the field on the way to its lowest scoring output in 18 games. The Cajuns close out their regular season on Sunday when they meet Interstate-10 rival New Orleans at 7:35 p.m. in Lakefront Arena.
