CAJUN MEN'S BASKETBALL ROLLS TO WIN AT UALR... Feb. 10, 2000
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- After being held scoreless in the first half,
Lonnie Thomas exploded for 15 points in leading Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns to an 88-62 win
over Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday.
Thomas came out of the locker room on fire, scoring the Cajuns'
first 10 points of the half and 15 of the first 20. In
addition, the Leesville, La., native also tied for team-high honors with six rebounds in
only 21 minutes of action.
With the win, the Cajuns collected their 12th win in 13 games and
improved to 18-6 overall and 9-1 in the Sun Belt Conference. UALR drops its 13th straight
game to fall to 3-18 overall and 0-11 in league play.
However, the win was marred by the loss of sophomore forward Robert Jupiter who was taken to a local hospital after seriously injuring his leg. After entering
the game late in the first half, the Baton Rouge native hit a driving layup along the
baseline but fell to the floor after landing on his feet.
UL Lafayette used steady shooting throughout the contest in
recording the win. After hitting 55.6 percent of their shots in the
first half, the Cajuns cooled only slightly in the final period and finished the night
hitting 53.4 percent from the field, their
second-best shooting performance of the season.
UL Lafayette entered the halftime break with a 43-29 lead but saw
the Trojans score the half's first four points. From there,
though, the Cajuns went on a 26-8 run over the next 10 minutes to build a 69-40 lead and
would never lead by less than 23 points the rest of the way.
Darryl Robins added 11 points for the Cajuns and tied Thomas for
team-high honors with six rebounds while Orlando Butler chipped in with 10 points,
including two 3-pointers.
Laverne Smith scored 20 points for UALR to lead all scorers
with Alan Barksdale posting 15 points with three 3-pointers and Stan Blackmon tallying 11
points.
In the first half, the Cajuns used a balanced offensive attack on
the way to a 43-39 halftime lead. Ten of the 12 UL Lafayette players who saw action in the
game's first 20 minutes scored at least two points with Jones' nine points leading the
way.
The Cajuns will continue their road swing through their northern
neighbor when they meet Arkansas State in a 1 p.m. game in Jonesboro. That game will be
televised live on ESPN with Michele Tafoya and Jimmy Dykes calling the action.
