CAJUN BASKETBALL TRIPPED UP AT AUBURN ... Dec. 4, 2000 AUBURN, Ala. – Marquis Daniels scored a career-high 26 points as Auburn took an 93-86 win over Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun men's basketball team Monday night at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum. Louisiana-Lafayette (2-2) dropped its second straight contest while playing in its first road contest of the year. Returning from a hip injury, Anthony Johnson came off the Cajun bench to score a team-best 22 points in only 26 minutes of action. It was the second straight game that the Chicago native tallied at least 20 points in a game this season. The Cajuns also went without the services of head coach Jessie Evans for most of the game. The fourth-year coach received two technical fouls and was ejected for the first time in his career at the 7:19 mark of the first half after arguing a Cajun foul. After the game, Evans said the Cajun's defensive efforts would have to improve for the squad to be successful during the rest of a rigorous December schedule. “You have to play through adversity. When you don't play defense and defend penetration, the opposition can put up a lot of points,” Evans said. “When you are on the road and you give up 94 points, you are in for a long night most of the time.” After Louisiana-Lafayette took a 43-39 lead into the locker room at the halftime break, Auburn jumped out of the second half with an 11-0 run to take a 50-43 lead. “We came out of the locker room and lost some intensity and just had a hard time getting started,” Evans said. “We just could not string enough minutes together.” The Cajuns battled back to tie the game against at 54-all on Blane Harmon's three-pointer at the 12:23 mark, but the Tigers took off on a 19-8 run over the next 4:10 for a 73-62 advantage with only 8:13 remaining. The Cajuns responded with a 13-4 run of their own and pulled to within 77-75 on Lonnie Thomas' bucket at the 3:56 mark.

However, that would be as close as Louisiana-Lafayette would get for the rest of the game. Another Daniels' field goal and Scott Pohlman's lone three-pointer of the game pushed the lead back to seven points. Orlando Butler burst through an early offensive slump with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Blane Harmon added 14 points in his first double-digit effort of the season and Lonnie Thomas tallied 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Pohlman posted 19 points for the Tigers, while Adam Harrington came off the bench to tally 16 points with four treys. Jamison Brewer also added 10 points. The Cajuns will now enjoy a lengthy break and won't return to action until Dec. 20 when they meet Samford in 5:15 p.m. contest during the first round at the Trend Homes Classic, hosted by Fresno State. “We'll give the guys some time off for finals and get back at it towards the end of the week,” Evans said.
