CAJUN BASKETBALL FALLS IN TREND HOMES CHAMPIONSHIP ... Dec. 20, 2000 FRESNO, Calif. – Anthony Johnson scored 21 points and Blane Harmon added 20 points for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun men's basketball team, but unfortunately, that would be about all the offense that the Cajuns would receive in an 85-69 loss to Fresno State in the championship of the Trend Homes Classic. Despite outrebounding their sixth straight opponent to open the season, the Cajuns (3-3) fell victim to some cold shooting from the field and a plethora of turnovers. Louisiana-Lafayette hit only 36.9 percent of its shots from the field and was 0-for-12 from the three-point line in the second half while coughing the ball up 26 times. Meanwhile, FSU blistered the next for a 54.5 clip from the field and hit 46 percent of its three-point attempts. “We just didn't get the job done defensively,” head coach Jessie Evans said. “Our big guys did not move their feet, and we allowed second shots on the perimeter.” All five starters for Fresno State (8-2) scored in double digits with Most Valuable Player Tito Maddox's 20 points and nine assists leading the way. Chris Jefferies added 16 points, while Shannon Swillis chipped in with 13 points and a team-best six rebounds. Melvin Ely and Demetrius Porter also added 10 points apiece. “We had no answer for Maddox,” Evans said. “He was able to get into the paint and elevate over us.” The Cajuns pulled to within 24-23 at the 8:36 mark on Harmon's basket, but that would be as close as Louisiana-Lafayette would get for the rest of the night. FSU took off on a 20-8 run over the next 7:23 for a 44-31 advantage. Louisiana-Lafayette used an 8-0 rally late in the second half and pulled to within 74-62 Johnson's jumper at the 5:06 mark. However, FSU scored seven of the game's next eight points to seal the victory. Harmon was Louisiana-Lafayette's lone selection to the All-Tournament team. He was joined on the squad by FSU's Chris Jefferies and Melvin Ely, Samford's Marc Salyers and Toledo's Greg Stempin. The defeat was made even worse by the loss of sophomore point guard Kenneth Lawrence late in the first half. The Little Rock, Ark., native injured his foot and sat out the entire second half. He will be further evaluated by Louisiana-Lafayette athletic trainers and team doctors when the team returns home Thursday afternoon. The Cajuns will now prepare to open the Sun Belt Conference season when they face South Alabama at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the Mitchell Center. That game will be a rematch of the 2000 Sun Belt Tournament championship, which Louisiana-Lafayette claimed with a 51-50 decision.
