CAJUN BASKETBALL ROLLS TO EXHIBITION VICTORY ... Nov. 9, 2000

LAFAYETTE – Lonnie Thomas and Darryl Robins each posted double-doubles as Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun men's basketball team rolled to a 95-50 win over Angola Thursday night at the Cajundome to open their exhibition season.

All 10 Cajuns who played in the game scored at least three points, with four Louisiana-Lafayette posting double digits. Thomas scored 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting and added a game-best 13 rebounds, while Robins posted 15 points to go with 11 rebounds.

Defensively, Louisiana-Lafayette outrebounded Angola 50-33 and held its opponent to only 33.9 percent shooting for the game.

"It was great to come out and play against someone else," said Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Jessie Evans, who begins his fourth season with the Cajuns. "We've got a mark on the wall, and we know where we've got to go from here."

While Thomas and Robins were controlling the inside, Orlando Butler led the outside attack for the Cajuns, hitting five 3-pointers on the way to 17 points on the night. Kenneth Lawrence also tallied 12 points for Louisiana-Lafayette in the win.

Mario Belarmino led Angola with seven points, while Edmar Vitoriano, Edmar de Carvalho, Ivo Alfredo, Vlademir Jeronimo, Pedro Kialunda and Carlos Aimeica added six points apiece.

Louisiana-Lafayette jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the game's first five-and-a-half minutes and used 51.6 percent shooting in the first half to take a 45-24 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.

In the second half, the Cajuns continued their hot shooting, hitting 20-of-38 shots, and eventually built a 47-point lead late in the game.

The Cajuns return to action at 7:05 p.m. at the Cajundome when they play host to Dillard in their final exhibition game this season. That game will be part of a doubleheader with the women's team which will meet the Houston Flight in a 4:30 p.m. contest.
