CAJUN BASKETBALL SWEEPS PAST McNEESE STATE ... Nov. 21, 2000 LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun basketball team used a 27-11 run to start the second half to turn a slim advantage into a comfortable double-digit lead on the way to an 88-81 win over McNeese State on Tuesday at the Cajundome.

Newcomer Anthony Johnson led the Cajuns with 22 points, while Lonnie Thomas added 18 points. Brett Smith also posted 10 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds. That Cajun frontcourt combined to score 50 points and grab 21 rebounds and help lead Louisiana-Lafayette (2-0) to a 45-35 advantage off the glass.

Demond Mallet led McNeese State (0-2) with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, which included a pair of three-pointers. Ira Miller and Ben Perkins each added 10 points for the Cowboys.

After taking a 42-38 lead into the locker room at the halftime break, Louisiana-Lafayette stormed out to a 69-49 lead on Billy Jones' three-pointer at the 8:15 mark. Thomas led the way for the Cajuns in the rally, scoring 13 of his 18 points in the game during that stretch.

Louisiana-Lafayette's hot play also extended to its shooting touch, as the Cajuns blistered the nets for 60.0 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. For the game, the Cajuns hit half of their 64 shots, the second straight game the Cajuns have hit 50 percent from the floor.

Both team struggled in the first half, which featured a combined 34 turnovers during the first 20 minutes.

McNeese State (0-2) controlled the game early and held a 23-17 lead at the 8:20 mark when Ben Perkins drilled a 10-foot jumper in the lane. But Louisiana-Lafayette took off on an 11-4 run over the next 3:37 to take a 28-27 lead.

The Cajuns eventually built an eight-point lead late in the first half before McNeese State chipped away late on two Tierre Brown free throws and an Ira Miller bucket.

The Cajuns wrap up their three-game season-opening homestand when they face Texas Tech in a 2 p.m. game Saturday at the Cajundome. That game will be part of a doubleheader with the Cajun women's team, which plays host to Southern Illinois at 11 a.m.
