Thomas also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds in posting the 14th double-double of his collegiate career. His point total surpassed his previous best of 21 against Arkansas State last season and was the most points by a Cajun since Sydney Grider hung 36 points on Tennessee-Chattanooga on Jan. 2, 1990.
Louisiana-Lafayette snapped a two-game losing streak in season openers and has now won its last 15 contests against the Wildcats. The Cajuns' triple-digit performance was also the first time that Louisiana-Lafayette broke 100 points since a 101-88 win over Texas-Pan American last season.
Anthony Johnson and Billy Jones both came off the bench to help lead the Cajun offense with 18 points and 15 points respectively. Jones was especially effective in the second half when he drilled all five shots from the field and went 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Johnson electrified the crowd of 3,051 at the Cajundome with several dunks and long-range shots.
Louisiana College kept it close in the game's first nine minutes and drew to within two points at 17-15 when Will Stone hit one of two free throws at the 11:11 mark. However, that would be the last points the Wildcats would score over the next 4:25 as the Cajun offense exploded on a 14-0 run in building a 31-15 lead.
The Cajuns would never lead by fewer than 16 points the rest of the way and built a 38-point advantage late in the game. Thomas led the Cajun rally with seven points during that stretch, Johnson added six points on two 3-pointers.
Louisiana-Lafayette was also boosted by a solid defensive effort, as shown by a 50-34 rebounding advantage, and some steady shooting. The Cajuns blistered the nets for a 54.2 percentage from the field while holding the Wildcats to only 39.4 percent in the game.
Clint Tracy led Louisiana College with 15 points while Sean Shields added 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Marcus Smith also scored 10 points for the Wildcats.
The Cajuns return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Interstate 10 rival McNeese State in a 7:05 p.m. contest at the Cajundome. That game will be part of a doubleheader with the women's team which meets Sam Houston State in a 4:30 p.m. game.
