CAJUNS POST SEASON HIGH POINTS AGAINST TAMCC ... Dec. 28, 1999
LAFAYETTE -- Blane Harmon and Reggie
DeGray each posted 15 points to lead Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns to an 85-77
victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday at the Cajundome.
After shooting only 35.8 percent from the field in
the first half, the Cajuns rebounded in the second half to hit more than 54 percent of
their shots from the field on the way to a season-high 85 points.
As the game drew to a close, UL Lafayette also
benefitted from their best performance of the season from the free throw line, hitting
87.5 percent from the charity stripe, including 6-of-7 in the final 67 seconds.
UL Lafayette raced out to a 37-31 halftime lead and
extended that to 16 points with 12:27 left on Orlando Butler's rebound of a Lonnie
Thomas miss.
However, TAMCC went on an 18-7 run over the next
five minutes to cut the Cajun lead to only five points. Michael Hicks highlighted the
Islander run with seven of his game-high 26 points and added 10 rebounds in the game.
But the Cajuns rallied with seven straight points
over the next 35 seconds to push the lead back to double digits.
Late in the contest, the Islanders cut the lead back
down to five points at the 2:08 and 0:56 marks. However in each case, the Cajuns answered
with two straight free throws to ice the win.
Lee Denmon also led the Islanders with 20 points on
7-of-19 shooting with Toby Thompson posting 11 points.
The Cajuns outrebounded their eighth straight opponent,
taking a 51-41 advantage on the glass. Brett Smith topped UL Lafayette with nine rebounds
and Kendall Regis added a career-high five blocked shots to lead a Cajun defensive effort
which forced the Islanders into a 37.3 percent shooting night.
