CAJUNS FALL AT SAN JUAN SHOOTOUT ... Dec. 21, 1999
SAN JUAN, P.R. -- Pepperdine used pressure defense and hot
shooting throughout the game on the way to a 99-53 victory over Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns
on Tuesday in the semifinals at the San Juan Shootout.
The Waves (8-2) forced the Cajuns into 29 turnovers, including 19
alone in the first half, and hit a Cajun opponent season-high 57.6 percent of their shots
to hand the Cajuns their biggest loss since the 1915-16 season.
""Once they got ahead and started to knock some threes
down, it just started to snowball and that's what happened tonight,'' head coach Jessie
Evans said. ""We just did not shoot the ball well and when you do that and add
in some turnovers, you're in for a long night.''
And it didn't seem to matter where the Waves shot from the floor.
Hitting 57.6 percent of all their shots from the field, the Waves were even better from
the three-point line with a 15-of-24 night, a 62.5 percent clip.
The game got away from the Cajun midway through the first half. UL
Lafayette broke a 14-14 tie at the 9:48 mark on Orlando Butler's three-point bucket.
However that would be the last field goal the Cajuns would score over the next five
minutes.
Meanwhile, Pepperdine exploded on a 22-0 run, highlighted by David
Lalazarian's eight points during the rally.
The Waves also forced the Cajuns into 19 first-half turnovers and a
34.5 percent shooting performance from the field. Combined with their own 60-percent
shooting effort in the first half, the Waves took a 52-27 lead into the locker room at the
break and never looked back again.
No UL Lafayette player scored in double digits with Lonnie Thomas'
eight points off the bench leading the way.
Lalazarian paced five Pepperdine players in double digits with 19
points, thanks to 3-of-5 shooting from behind the three-point arc. Craig Lews added 18
points with four treys of his own while
Brandon Armstrong added 14 points. Tommie Prince and Kelvin Gibbs
also added 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Cajuns will now prepare to face the loser of the Auburn-Virginia
Tech in a 4:30 p.m. game Wednesday.
