POOLE LEADS MEN'S BASKETBALL IN SECOND EXHIBITION ... Nov. 12, 1998
LAFAYETTE -- Senior Reginald Poole tallied 21 points, 10 rebounds and five steals and keyed a second-half surge that propelled USL's Ragin' Cajun basketball team to a 68-62 victory over the Arkansas Express here Thursday night in the Cajuns' second and final exhibition contest of the 1998-99 season.The Cajuns, who open the season for real next Thursday, Nov. 19, at Southern Mississippi, trailed by as many as 10 points early in the second half before going on a 14-2 run that provided a 48-46 lead with 13:09 left on Chris Funderburk's steal and inside basket, and just over a minute later Poole canned a three-pointer that gave the Cajuns the lead for good at 51-49 with 12:08 left.
USL then made seven of eight free throws in the final 35 seconds to hold off the Express (2-5), which hit on three three-pointers in the final 0:37 to make it close in the closing minute.
Poole, who had 24 points and 12 rebounds in the Cajuns' other exhibition contest victory over VASDA USA last Saturday, got help from the 10 points each of Funderburk and Kendall Regis. David Patrick and Blane Harmon each had nine points and a team-high four assists.
Freddie Morgan had 16 points and Corey Camper 13 for the Express.
