Leonard Kleinpeter was a three-sport letterman at USL - the first in school history since 1956 - lettering in football, baseball and track and field. He was best known for his baseball exploits, gaining honorable mention All-America honors as a senior in 1966. He set a pair of Gulf States Conference records for most home runs (five) and most stolen bases (13) in a season. A four-year letterman, he was an all-GSC choice in 1966 and led the Cajuns in runs scored for three seasons.

He was a two-year letterwinner in football and was an All-GSC selection as a wide receiver in 1966. He combined for a total of 12 touchdowns passes and kickoff returns in addition to setting a Cajuns record by averaging 28.1 yards per catch.

A two-year letterman in track, Kleinpeter set a school-record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.7, and helped set a school mark in the 440-yard relay with a time of 41.1 while earning All-GSC honors. He was runnerup for Louisiana's Collegiate Athlete of the Year in 1966 and won the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce Award for all-round excellence in athletics, academics and leadership as a senior.
