Athlete of the Year…Eight-time Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week…One of only five
players in NCAA history to record 500-plus strikeouts, ended the season with
524K over 315 2/3 innings… Her 524 strikeouts were the most ever for a pitcher
from a Louisiana school (passed up Britni Sneed’s 478 in 2002)...Led the NCAA
with 45 victories and finished with the fourth-most single-season wins in
Division I history...Set the school record for victories, passing the previous
record of 35 set by Melissa Coronado in 2001...Had 29 double-digit strikeout
performances (out of 53 appearances) to her credit and reached five strikeouts
in 47 of 53 outings....From March 24 through May 20, enjoyed a personal best
20-game win streak...Against U.S. Olympic Team at KIA Klassic, struck out six
batters…Had five no-hitters including a 15-strikeout no-no against
Missouri…Struck out a school, single-game record 22 in a nine-inning no-hitter
of Nevada at the McNeese Cowgirl Classic…Surrendered 154 hits through 315 2/3
innings…Set the school single-season and career record for strikeouts…Accounted
for 45 of Louisiana-Lafayette’s 60 victories (75 percent)…Averaged over 11
strikeouts per seven innings (second in the nation)…Struck out 15 batters five
times, 16 twice and school-record 22…Allowed four-or-less hits in 13 appearances
of seven-plus innings…Feb. 8-Feb. 21 had double-digit strikeouts in eight
straight appearances...She set the school single-season record with her 280th of
the season vs. Princeton at the KIA Klassic and became the first pitcher in
program history to record 300 strikeouts in a single season with her 300th in
the first game of the Nicholls State twinbill on March 24 at Ragin’ Cajuns
Softball Park...With her fifth strikeout of the second game of a doubleheader at
Louisiana Tech on April 14, she netted her 821st career strikeout - a tally
which set a new school career record by surpassing the former record of 820 set
by former All-American Kyla Hall...It took Mitchell 103 appearances to set the
record; Hall needed 132 appearances and did so as a senior...With her eighth
strikeout, with the bases loaded and no outs, of the second game against FIU
Saturday, April 18, Mitchell notched her 400th strikeout of the season. She
became the first player in program history to achieve the feat and just the 16th
in NCAA history to strike out over 400 batters in a single season joining the
likes of Courtney Blades, Britni Sneed, Cat Osterman, Michelle Granger, Alicia
Hollowell and Monica Abbott...With her eighth and final strikeout of the Cajuns
winner’s bracket semifinals game with top-ranked Arizona on Friday, May 20,
Mitchell reached 500 strikeouts...Tossed a complete-game shutout of top-ranked
Arizona in an elimination game in NCAA Regional play as the Ragin’ Cajuns
eliminated the Wildcats from the tournament and snapped UA’s streak of 16
consecutive World Series appearance....Tossed the second no-hitter in Sun Belt
Conference Tournament history in leading the Cajuns to a 3-0 winner’s bracket
finals victory over FIU...Struck out 14 Golden Panther hitters en route to
picking up her 40th win of the season – made her just the 12th pitcher in NCAA
history to notch 40 wins in a single season...During the Middle Tennessee
series, picked up two wins and two saves which helped the Cajuns complete a
perfect Sun Belt Conference regular season slate (18-0)...In Sunday’s second
game she pitched three innings of relief after the Cajuns regained the lead to
preserve the clean slate...Had 14 solo shutouts (three in NCAA Regional play)
and 10 combined ones...Tossed four no-hitters over two week span including one
on back-to-back days versus Nevada at the McNeese Cowgirl Classic...On Feb. 18
she no-hit Nicholls State and the same week turned the trick on Missouri Feb.
21...The next weekend at the McNeese Tournament, she no-hit Nevada on Feb. 27
and Feb. 28...Tossed two no-hitters, six victories and had 74 strikeouts in 42
innings of work and the honor of being named the Most Outstanding Player of the
Mardi Gras Classic hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette the weekend of Feb. 20-22.
SOPHOMORE SEASON
(2003)
Named the 2003 Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the
Year...Member of the 2003 All-Sun Belt Conference First
Team...Led the Sun Belt with a season ERA of 1.11...Set the
school single-season record with 279 strikeouts, breaking
the previous record of 256 set by Cheryl Longeway in
1995...Struck out USA Olympic Team member Jenny Topping of
Cal State Fullerton for the record-breaking 257th strikeout
of the season...Appeared in 41 games, starting 35, and
averaged a school-record 8.8 strikeouts per game...Tossed a
perfect game in the season opener, three other no-hitters
and six complete-game one-hitters...Pitched back-to-back
one-hitters of Top 20 teams when she one-hit Oklahoma on
March 14 at the KIA Klassic and lost on a sacrifice fly in
the bottom of the sixth and in her next outing tossed a
complete-game one-hit shutout of then-No. 16 Alabama in a
2-0 win on March 27...Had 10 double-digit strikeout
performances including a career-high 16 against FIU in the
semifinals of the 2003 SBC Tournament, tying the program’s
single-game record set by Kim Eisnaugle on March 20,
1986...Struck out at least five batters in eight of her 35
starts and 29 of her 41 appearances...Turned in her best
performances of the season at the NCAA Regional No. 6 in
Fullerton, Calif...Opened the regional with a no-hitter of
San Diego State...Dominated top-seeded Cal State Fullerton
and second-seed Oklahoma State to pitch the Cajuns into the
regional final...Fanned 12 CSF batters in a two-hit shutout
and then struck out 10 OSU batters in the
semifinals...Entered championship Sunday of the regional
having allowed just three hits over 21 innings while
striking out 28...Suffered an inflamed bicep in her pitching
arm in game one vs. Oregon in the regional final and was
pulled after just 10 pitches...Came back in game two,
despite the risk of further injury, and tossed a complete
game to send the Cajuns to the WCWS...Started both games at
the WCWS despite the injury, going 11 2/3 innings combined.
FRESHMAN SEASON (2002)
Was named the 2002
Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year...Also named a
member of the All-SBC First Team...Led the Cajuns’ pitching
staff in wins (20), games started (24), appearances (27),
innings pitched (159), strikeouts (164) and complete games
(17)...First collegiate start was against Southwest Missouri
State Feb. 16 at the Oklahoma/Nike Classic...Struck out 12
SMS batters, including the three-hole hitter all three
times...Finished the OU/Nike Classic 2-0, striking out 25
batters in 16 1/3 innings...Started the season 5-0...First
loss was a 3-2 loss at then-No. 23 Texas A&M...Returned home
Monday, March 4 against Long Island and struck out 15
batters, one shy of the school record of 16 set by Kim
Eisnaugle...Pitched well against Top 15 members Arizona and
Washington at the Kia Classic...Tossed a four-hitter in a
1-0 loss to Arizona...Arizona’s run came on a solo
homerun...Struck out 15 batters in Arizona and Washington
games combined...Sat out action from March 29-April 13 with
sore ribs, missing six games...Returned April 13 at Middle
Tennessee in game two...Picked up three wins at New Mexico
State...Tossed three-hit shutout April 21 in game two...Had
seven-game winning streak snapped in loss at UL Monroe April
24...Pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief in game two April 27
against Florida International in helping the Cajuns rally
for 4-3 win in eight innings...Finished four-game series
with FIU 3-0, allowing just one earned run over 19 1/3
innings of work...Tossed a three-hitter at Southern Miss
April 30, striking out nine in the process...Pitched a
two-hit shutout of FIU at the Sun Belt Conference
Tournament...Went 8-0 in SBC play with a 1.62 ERA...Allowed
just 35 hits over 47 2/3 SBC innings...Led the SBC in
batters struck out looking (59), strikeouts per game (7.35)
and wins (20)...Was second in the SBC with 164 strikeouts
and 1.86 hits allowed per game.
