NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT RECRUITING CALENDARS OFFICIAL/UNOFFICIAL VISITS ARMS LOGIN

If you aspire to be a student-athlete at UL or any other NCAA institution, there are several things that you should know regarding NCAA eligibility requirements and the recruiting process. A great deal of this  important information is explained in the Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete.

College-bound student-athletes preparing to enroll in a Division I or Division II school have to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center to ensure they have met amateurism standards and are academically prepared for college coursework. You can register for a NCAA Eligibility Center account here.  For a list of items that prospects should have prepared prior to registering with the NCAA Eligibility Center, click here.

All SAT and ACT scores must be reported to the NCAA Eligibility Center directly from the testing agency. When registering for the SAT or ACT, prospects should input the code 9999 to make sure that the score is reported directly to the Eligibility Center. To have test scores reported to UL as well, prospects should input the code 1612 (ACT) or 6672 (SAT).

NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT

The NLI is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution.
  • A prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year (two semesters).
  • The institution agrees to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year (two semesters).
The penalty for not fulfilling the NLI agreement: A student-athlete has to serve one year in residence (full-time, two semesters or three quarters) at the next NLI member institution and lose one season of competition in all sports.

An important provision of the NLI program is a recruiting prohibition applied after a prospective student-athlete signs the NLI. This prohibition requires member institutions to cease recruitment of a prospective student-athlete once an NLI is signed with another institution.

Any VERBAL offer from a coach is NOT a binding agreement.

RECRUITING CALENDARS

There are several different periods in a recruiting calendar, including a: (1) contact period; (2) evaluation period; (3) quiet period; and (4) dead period.
  1. Contact period: During a contact period, a college coach may have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, watch student-athletes compete and visit their high schools, and write or telephone student-athletes or their parents.
  2. Evaluation period: During an evaluation period, a college coach may watch college-bound student-athletes compete, visit their high schools, and write or telephone student-athletes or their parents. However, a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents off the college’s campus during an evaluation period.
  3. Quiet period: During a quiet period, a college coach may only have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents on the college’s campus.  A coach may not watch student-athletes compete (unless a competition occurs on the college’s campus) or visit their high schools. Coaches may write or telephone college-bound student-athletes or their parents during this time.
  4. Dead period: During a dead period, a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period.

OFFICIAL/UNOFFICIAL VISITS

Official (Paid) Visits
An Official Visit is financed in whole or in part by the institution. All prospective student- athletes must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center and provide an academic transcript to the University to obtain an official visit. A prospective student may take five Official Visits, with no more than one per Division I institution. Multi-sport athletes are limited to a total of five visits.

Unofficial (Nonpaid) Visits
A prospect may visit an institution at their own expense an unlimited number of times and may make unofficial visits prior to their senior year of high school. NCAA rules prohibit prospective student-athletes from making unofficial visits during designated dead periods, specifically defined by each sport.
Some sports prohibit unofficial visits prior to specified dates, please contact your respective coaches or Compliance Office to seek further information.
