NCAA Infractions Report

The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions found that over a period of three years, a former assistant football coach impermissibly arranged for several prospective football student-athletes to obtain fraudulent entrance exam scores. The fraudulent scores enabled the prospects to be eligible for admission, athletics aid and/or competition. Additionally, the former assistant coach provided impermissible cash inducements to a prospect who eventually enrolled at the institution. The coach was also cited for unethical conduct relating to his failure to cooperate during the investigation of the violations.
During the course of the investigation, the University self-imposed a series of penalties that included reductions in scholarships, official visits, and recruiting contacts, as well as the vacation of the 2011 football season. The Committee accepted the institution’s penalties – including its proposed two-year probationary period – and added a financial penalty ($5,000), reporting requirements, additional recruiting visit and contact limitations, and vacation of particular contests in the 2012-2014 seasons. The Committee on Infractions did not impose a postseason penalty.
The Committee commended the institution for its level of cooperation in this case, and noted that “the institution's exemplary cooperation in this case was a model for the kind of relationship and cooperation member institutions should strive for in the infractions process.”
