Cajuns' Defense Dominates In 34-7 Win at Charlotte

Louisiana holds Niners to 137 yards total offense; outscore Niners 24-0 in second half
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Lunch Winfield went 19-for-26 for 149 yards with a touchdown and Louisiana turned in one of its best defensive efforts in a quarter-century in earning a 34-7 win over Charlotte on Saturday at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
Brent Gordon Jr., had an interception, forced two fumbles and recovered one as Louisiana (3-1) limited Charlotte (0-4) to 137 yards of total offense – its lowest allowed since Sept. 1, 2001 when the Cajuns gave up 57 yards to Nicholls.
Louisiana led 3-0 after Tony Sterner's 29-yard field goal in the first quarter and 10-0 in the second when Winfield tossed a 3-yard TD pass to Steven Blanco. The Ragin' Cajuns were driving in the second quarter when a fumble was scooped up by Jaylon Johnson, who returned it for a 54-yard touchdown with :24 remaining in the first half.
The Cajuns scored on their opening drive of the second half to take a 17-7 lead when JJ Garner capped a 10-play, 83-yard drive with a 7-yard TD run. Louisiana added a pair of fourth-down stops in the second half with Sterner opening a 17-point fourth quarter with a 44-yard field goal.
Winfield scored on a 9-yard scoring run with 9:21 remaining for a 27-7 lead and Anthony Reagan Jr., added a 4-yard TD in the final minute.
Darrell Smith led Louisiana on the ground with 43 yards on 10 carries while Landon Strother caught four passes. Gordon and Maurion Eleam recorded a team-high seven tackles for the Ragin' Cajuns.
The Cajuns held Charlotte to 26 yards on 15 carries with the Niners going 17-for-30 through the air for 111 yards.
Louisiana will open Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday (October 3) when it faces Arkansas State in the annual Homecoming Game at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be available on ESPN+.
