Louisiana To Celebrate 50th Anniversary Of Ragin' Cajuns 9-2 Squad

1976 Ragin' Cajuns opened with eight straight wins under head coach Augie Tammariello

The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football program will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1976 team during Saturday's game against UAB at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium.
 
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Single-game tickets are available and can be purchased through RaginCajuns.com/Tickets.
 
The 1976 USL team, led by head coach Augie Tammariello, opened the season with eight consecutive victories, including Southland Conference wins over Louisiana Tech, Lamar, UT Arlington and Arkansas State. The Ragin' Cajuns finished the season with a 9-2 record and capped the year with a 7-5 victory over Northeast Louisiana, now known as ULM.
 
The 1976 squad also set a school attendance record, drawing 163,143 fans to Cajun Field during the season.
 
Quarterback Roy Henry led the Louisiana offense, passing for 1,709 yards and 18 touchdowns. Dave Oliver was Henry's top receiving target, catching 59 passes for 10 touchdowns.
 
Defensively, Ron Irving led the Ragin' Cajuns with eight interceptions. Irving would go on to earn All-Southland Conference honors twice during his Louisiana career.
 
Four members of the 1976 team earned first-team All-Southland Conference honors following the season, including Henry, defensive end Keith Walker and linebacker Bob Rule.
