Louisiana strikes early and leans on Noble, Hoover to secure 5-2 win at Lamson Park
LAFAYETTE – Power at the plate and steady pitching carried the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team to a 5-2 victory over McNeese on Tuesday, March 24 at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.
With the win, the Ragin' Cajuns finished their March homestand with a second straight victory and a 3-1 mark. UL also collected a key result in a matchup of two Top 50 RPI squads.
Tuesday's meeting was the first in a midweek home-and-home series with McNeese. Louisiana returns the visit with a trip to Lake Charles on April 21.
Louisiana (20-13) struck quickly, using a pair of home runs in the opening inning to take control and never trail.
Haley Hart (3-for-3, 2 HR, 3 RBI) ignited the offense by leading off the bottom of the first with a home run to left field. Two batters later, Brooke Otto (1-for-2, BB, HR, 2 RBI) delivered a two-run blast to center that scored Dayzja Williams and pushed the Ragin' Cajuns ahead 3-0.
McNeese (20-13) answered in the second inning when Corine Poncho connected on a two-run home run to trim the lead to 3-2.
The Ragin' Cajuns quickly responded in their half of the second inning as Hart struck again, launching her second home run of the night — a two-run shot to center that scored Mia Liscano and extended Louisiana's advantage to 5-2.
Hart finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs, three RBI and a walk to pace the Louisiana offense. Otto added two RBI with her first-inning homer as the Ragin' Cajuns totaled six hits on the night.
It was the first multiple home run game of Hart's collegiate rookie season. She moved into a tie with Otto for the team lead with seven home runs.
In the circle, Bethaney Noble earned the win after working 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three. Sage Hoover entered in the sixth inning and shut the door, tossing 1.2 scoreless frames with two strikeouts to secure her first save of the season.
McNeese threatened to cut into the lead in both the fifth and sixth inning with multiple runners aboard. Dayzja Williams initiated a double play one a line out to help Noble exit the fifth unscathed and Hoover ended the threat in the sixth then went on to retire the side in order in the seventh to seal the victory.
The Ragin' Cajuns and Cowgirls met for the 139rd time in program history. UL increased its all-time series lead to 112-27 and posted its fourth straight win over McNeese at home. It was the first matchup at Lamson Park since March 2024.
