Cajuns Cruise Past Northern Iowa, 10-2, in Six at Lamson Park

Early surge and three home runs send Louisiana back on the road with momentum
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team established the lead early and delivered the knockout blow in the sixth inning to defeat Northern Iowa, 10-2, in six innings on Tuesday, February 24 at Lamson Park.

The Ragin' Cajuns (11-6) scored in each of the first three innings to seize control before erupting for four runs in the sixth to end the game via the run rule.

Louisiana finished with eight hits and took advantage of three UNI errors in the six-inning win. Sage Hoover (3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K) started and set the tone in the circle with 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

Tuesday's contest was the lone at home for UL in the current stretch 19 out of 20 games on the road. The Ragin' Cajuns now return to the road until the SBC home opener on March 20 vs. Texas State.

UL struck first in the opening inning when Dayzja Williams singled, stole second and later scored on a fielding error for a 1-0 lead.

The Ragin' Cajuns added three runs in the second capped off by two-run single down the left-field line from Haley Hart (1-for-3, 2 RBI), then in the third inning Brooke Otto (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) pushed the lead to 6-0 when she launched a two-run home run to left field.

Northern Iowa (6-6) answered with two runs in the fourth, highlighted by an RBI single from Sykora Smith, trimming the deficit to 6-2. Bailey Mackles (3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 K) adjusted the final two innings of her relief appearance, holding the Panthers scoreless the final two frames.

The Cajuns put the game away in the sixth. Lillian Soto (1-of-1, HR) led off with a pinch-hit solo home run, and after Mia Liscano (2-for-2, two doubles) recorded her second double of the night, Mia Norwood (1-for-3, HR, 3 RBI) launched a three-run homer to left center to seal the victory.

Norwood led the Ragin' Cajuns with three RBI, while Otto and Hart each drove in two. The three home runs increased Louisiana's team season total to 21, placing the squad on the doorstep of last season's total (22).

The game was completed in 1 hour, 49 minutes in front of an announced attendance of 1,462.

Louisiana defeated UNI for the second time in as many series meetings. It was the first matchup between the two programs since the 2014 season opener (Feb. 7, 2014).

Louisiana is back on the road from Friday-Sunday, February 27-March 1 at the Texas A&M Invitational in Bryan-College Station, Texas – the start of a series of 12 consecutive games away from home through March 20.

The Ragin' Cajuns open play in the tournament on Friday (Feb. 27) facing Saint Mary's at 2:00 p.m. and host-and No. 13-ranked Texas A&M at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday (Feb. 28) features a matchup with Kennesaw State and a rematch with Saint Mary's, back-to-back games beginning at 11:30 a.m., then on Sunday UL takes on Texas A&M in the tournament finale at 1:30 p.m.
