Junior claimed Louisiana Classics; moved up to No. 89 nationally
NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana's Malan Potgieter picked up more honors this week after the junior was named as the Sun Belt Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Â
Potgieter, from Kirkwood, South Africa, posted a 9-under-par 207 (71-65-71) and became the first Louisiana golfer to claim medalist honors at the 40th annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
Â
He beat out a 78-player field that included top 100 players Gunnlaugur Arni Sveinsson of LSU (No. 11), defending Louisiana Classics champion Phichaksn Maichon of Texas A&M (No. 53) and Lukas Boandl of Rice (No. 63)
Â
Potgieter claimed the first-day lead and held the lead heading into the final hole on Tuesday before being forced into a sudden death playoff by LSU's Alfons Bondesson. Potgieter would recover to defeat Bondesson on the third hole of a sudden death playoff – the third in the history of the event.
Â
His 7-under-par 65 in the second round – his eighth round of the season in the 60's and tied for his lowest round of his career – was the lowest by a Ragin' Cajun since Peter Hinnant's 8-under-64 in 2021. The record round for Potgieter was aided by a four-hole span on the front nine which consisted of eagle, par, par, par
Â
Potgieter helped Louisiana to a third-place finish in the 12-team field, finishing 12 strokes behind No. 7-ranked LSU and 10 shots behind three-time defending tournament champion and No. 24-ranked Texas A&M.
