Ragin' Cajuns hold off late Bobcat rally to win 13th straight over departing SBC foe

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana built a commanding halftime lead and held off a furious late rally to edge Texas State 42-39 on Saturday night in a Sun Belt Conference clash at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium.

Lunch Winfield accounted for five touchdowns – three through the air and two on the ground – as Louisiana (4-6, 3-3 SBC) used a 28-point second quarter to seize control. Texas State (3-6, 0-5 SBC) piled up 528 yards of offense but couldn't overcome Louisiana's early dominance and the clock, which the Cajuns controlled for nearly 38 minutes.

After spotting Texas State an early 10-7 lead, Louisiana erupted behind Winfield's efficient play and a defense that turned a pair of takeaways into 14 points. Winfield, who was 10-for-10 through the air in the second quarter, found Caden Jensen for a 27-yard score to regain the lead, then watched running back Bill Davis punch in a 12-yard touchdown to make it 21-10.

Moments later, a fumble recovery by Cameron Whitfield set up another Winfield strike – a 12-yard toss to Shelton Sampson Jr. – before Winfield capped the half with a 1-yard keeper to send Louisiana into the locker room with a 35-17 lead.

Louisiana's defense delivered key plays in the first half, forcing two turnovers that directly led to touchdowns. Safety Kody Jackson's interception in the second quarter helped spark the onslaught, and Whitfield's fumble return off a strip sack by Jordan Lawson deep in Bobcat territory helped the Ragin' Cajuns take a 28-10 lead.

The Cajuns added what proved to be the decisive score early in the fourth quarter when Winfield barreled in from three yards out, extending the cushion to 42-20 with 13:02 remaining. Texas State quarterback Brad Jackson responded with three consecutive touchdown drives – including a 49-yard run and a 38-yard scoring strike to Beau Sparks – before connecting with Chris Dawn Jr., on a 21-yard TD pass to pull the Bobcats within three with 3:12 remaining.

But Louisiana's offense ground down the clock on its final possession, converting a crucial third down – a 19-yard pass from Winfield to Sampson Jr., on third-and-13 – before Winfield gained seven yards on fourth-and-2 to seal the win and improve the Ragin' Cajuns all-time record against the Bobcats to 13-0.

Winfield finished 17 of 27 for 192 yards and three touchdowns, adding 49 rushing yards on 18 carries and a pair of TDs. Sampson Jr. hauled in five passes for 80 yards and two scores – his second straight week with multiple TDs, while Davis paced the ground game with 87 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

Texas State's Jackson threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns, completing 26 of 33 passes. Sparks had 10 receptions for 186 yards and a touchdown for the Bobcats to go along with his 49-yard scoring run.

Louisiana outgained Texas State on the ground, 192-168, and converted 12 of 19 third downs chances.

Defensively, Jaden Dugger and Brent Gordon Jr. led the Cajuns with nine and eight tackles, respectively, while Lawson contributed two sacks. Drenon Fite III added a sack for the Ragin' Cajuns while Maurion Eleam added seven tackles with Terrence Williams finishing with six.
