Perry, Davis combine for 184 yards on the ground as UL improves to 2-0
KENNESAW, Ga. – Louisiana's running back combo of Zylan Perry and Elijah Davis combined for 184 yards on the ground and three touchdowns and the Ragin' Cajuns erased an early deficit with 34 unanswered points in a 34-10 win over Kennesaw State on Saturday at Fifth Third Stadium.
Ben Wooldridge completed 15 of 19 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown while Dalen Cambre's blocked punt in the second quarter helped cap off a 20-point first half as Louisiana (2-0) improved to 2-0 for the second time in three years and fifth since 2000.
Kennesaw State (0-2) whittled off over eight minutes on its opening drive took a 7-0 lead as Preston Daniels capped a 16-play, 74-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.
Louisiana would take its opening drive and use up 7:15 off the clock before Kenneth Almendares' 30-yard field goal with 13:55 left in the second quarter capped a 13-play, 74-yard drive to cut the lead to 7-3.
The Ragin' Cajuns defense would then force KSU to punt on its next five possessions, including three straight three-and-outs while scoring on five of their final seven drives.
Davis, who gained 80 yards on 11 carries, would give Louisiana a 10-7 lead after capping a 10-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard TD plunge with 6:02 remaining in the half. Wooldridge would connect on a 52-yard pass to Jacob Bernard on the Ragin' Cajuns ensuing possession before Perry, who had a career-best 104 yards on 10 attempts, scored two plays later from 19 yards out and a 17-7 lead.
Cambre then got in the mix on KSU's next punt as he recorded his third career blocked punt and leading to Almendares' 26-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
Robert Williams caught a 38-yard pass from Wooldridge in the third quarter before the duo connected on the next play for a 3-yard scoring pass and a 27-7 Louisiana lead with 9:02 left.
Davis would cap of the scoring with his second 1-yard TD for a 34-7 lead in the third quarter before KSU's Austin Welch booted a 30-yard field goal with 7:30 remaining in the game.
Louisiana finished with 454 yards of total offense, including 257 on the ground. Jacob Bernard caught four passes for 84 yards to lead the Ragin' Cajuns with Tylon Citizen rushing for 29 yards on five carries in the fourth quarter.
K.C. Ossai recorded 12 tackles to lead Louisiana's defense, which limited KSU to 204 yards of total offense including 62 over its next five possessions.
Michael Benefield led KSU's option attack with 31 yards on the ground on nine carries while Davis Bryson added 29 yards on the ground while finishing 7 of 13 through the air for 93 yards.
Louisiana will head into an open date before returning to play on Saturday, September 21 against in-state rival Tulane (1-1) at Cajun Field.
