As young newlyweds, Steve and Sarah Oubre's world has always revolved around all things Ragin' Cajuns. Living in the Saint Streets neighborhood, right outside the gates of the university, they seldom missed participating in something centered around the multitude of offerings on campus. However, their connections to this place began even before then.
Steve's indoctrination began as a high school sophomore while participating in a spring science rally representing Loreauville High School. Already expressing a career interest in architecture, he took the opportunity on that beautiful spring day to visit the architecture school. He was hooked on the University of Louisiana. The infectious friendliness of everyone he met, the exciting work coming from the architecture academy, and most importantly, the beauty of the place, solidified his future connection to the university.
Sarah, who grew up in Crowley and was herself a Crowley Gent, met Steve several years later while she was completing a degree in finance with dreams of owning her own high-end women's clothing store.
As dreams often do, hers evolved with the birth of their son, Parker Stanton. Sarah's career aspirations took an interesting turn when she became the Senior VP of Human Resources for the publicly traded Home Bank, another Lafayette institution and a major supporter of Louisiana Athletics.
One thing that hasn't changed is their mutual love for all things Ragin' Cajuns. Steve still speaks endlessly of his college days, watching Dwight "Bo" Lamar perform at Blackham Coliseum to sell-out crowds, and his excitement as a 1971 freshman, pledging SAE and attending the inaugural game at the brand-new Cajun Field, replacing the too-small McNaspy Stadium.
As season ticket holders since 1980, there have been more moments of joy than despair. The family sat on Row 32 in Section D, with Parker in tow, every weekend, hot or cold, rain or shine, cheering their team on. They were present in 1996 when UL beat Texas A&M and watched as the crowd flooded the field post-game, tearing down the goalposts.
But the most vivid memory wasn't at the stadium at all; it wasn't even in the U.S. In 2012, as Sarah, Steve, and Parker sailed through the British Virgin Islands, they made sure to dock near a TV to watch the Cajuns take on East Carolina in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl at the Superdome. The chosen venue was a packed bar in Tortola. Rest assured, people knew who the Ragin' Cajuns were that night when, in classic Cajun fashion, they won the game in the final minutes!
Parker surprised the family when he announced his desire to attend UL because of his love for Lafayette, and even more so when he expressed interest in majoring in architecture, which he ultimately achieved. He now cheers the Cajuns on as a designer for a Nike-affiliated firm operating on the West Coast, building fabulous places all over the globe.
In 2015, Sarah and Steve decided it was time to knock off some bucket list items. They retired, purchased a 45-foot French sailboat appropriately named "Lacadie," and sailed for five years, eventually returning home to re-engage. Sarah now volunteers for several non-profits while pursuing her artistic endeavors. Steve continues to enjoy traveling, bird hunting, fly fishing, and, of course, the Ragin' Cajuns. What excites him most is his role as the "Master Architect of the University." In that role, his primary responsibility is ensuring that the master plan, which he developed in 2013 and is currently updating, is achieved as envisioned. The stadium and other athletic venues, both built and envisioned, are all part of that 2013 vision.
The Oubres state, "The University of Louisiana has given the state, and indeed the world, a bounty of richness since its inception in 1898, always putting forth 120% in all that it does. Each component, whether curriculum, research, academic prowess, or most assuredly athletics, is a measure of who we are. Each aspect is supported with the understanding that anything less than a 120% commitment will not achieve our end goal of greatness! Geaux Cajuns!"
