Almendares Named SBC Special Teams Player of the Week

SBC's second-leading scorer booted eventual game-winning field goal at Wake Forest
NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana's Kenneth Almendares picked up his first honors of the season when he was named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office released on Monday.
Almendares, who is second in the league in scoring with 37 points, converted on a season-high five extra points and was perfect on a pair of field goal attempts, including a go-ahead 31-yard kick with 52 seconds remaining to lift Louisiana past Wake Forest, 41-38.
He kicked a season-high 50-yard field in the third quarter – the fourth 50-plus yard make in his career to give Louisiana a 24-17 lead. Almendares had a season-best four touchbacks on eight kickoff attempts against the Demon Deacons while limiting Wake Forest to 16.3 yards on three returns.
Almendares' 11 points increased his career total to 272 points, moving him past Alonzo Harris (270, 2011-14) for sixth place in school history. The Clute, Texas native enters Saturday's game at Southern Miss needing five points to surpass Elijah McGuire (276, 2013-16) for fifth-place.
