Gillie, Lawson, Ossai part of record 859 players on watch list
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football players AJ Gillie, Jordan Lawson and K.C. Ossai were part of a record 859 players at all levels of college football named on Wednesday to the Reese's Senior Bowl Watch List.
Â
The trio was part of 38 Sun Belt Conference players – the fifth-most of any league in the nation – named to the watch list. The longest running collegiate all-star game will be played on February 1, 2025 at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Ala.
Â
Gillie, a 6-foot-2, 328-pound guard, was named a first-team Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference and Outland Trophy Watch list member last month. The Natchitoches, Louisiana, native started all 13 games at left guard for the Ragin' Cajuns and was a third-team All-SBC pick in 2023.
Â
He tallied 41 knockdowns through the regular season and posted a season-high grade of 94 percent at Minnesota. Gillie added a grade of 93 in a win over Texas State and was a key member of the offensive line where he helped the Ragin' Cajuns offense rank second in the SBC in rushing offense and third in scoring.
Â
Lawson, a 6-4, 243-pound redshirt junior, played in all 13 games for the Ragin' Cajuns in 2023 with 43 tackles (24 solo), 8.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks. He added four quarterback hurries on the season and debuted with a season-high six tackles in a win against Northwestern State
Â
He added five stops in games against Old Dominion, Arkansas State and Jacksonville State while recording three stops – all for loss – and tied a season high with two sacks in regular-season finale against ULM.
Â
Ossai, a preseason second-team All-SBC selection and member of the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watch list, led Louisiana in tackles (95) in 2023 while adding 4.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
Â
The Conroe, Texas native capped off the season with a career-high 18 tackles and 2.5 stops for loss against Jacksonville State in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Ossai added nine tackles and a forced fumble against Texas State with eight stops coming in games against UAB, Minnesota and Southern Miss.
Â
Per last November's ruling by the National Football League, all college players three years removed from high school are now eligible to enter the NFL Draft and thus, for the first time ever, the Watchlist includes 81 underclassmen.
