Cajuns use team effort to make quick work of the Chanticleers
LAFAYETTE – Eleven different players accounted for at least one run scored as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team stormed past Coastal Carolina for a 13-0 (5 inn.) win on Saturday, March 23 at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.
Seven different players combined to drive home the runs led by multiple-RBI efforts from Brooke Ellestad and Sam Roe who had three RBI apiece plus Maddie Hayden who drove in a pair.
While the UL offense pounded out 12 hits, starting pitcher Lexie Delbrey hurled a three-hit shutout at the visiting Chanticleers.
With the victory, Louisiana (20-13, 5-0 SBC) picked up the series win over Coastal Carolina (18-13, 1-4 SBC). It marks the Ragin' Cajuns 83rd consecutive Sun Belt Conference series won, a streak which dates back to March 2013.
Louisiana created distance from the start, loading the bases with no outs in the first inning and proceeding to plate five runs. In the scoring spree was the first RBI of the contest for both Roe and Ellestad.
Delbrey held the momentum on the Cajuns side with another scoreless frame in the second, then in the bottom half of the inning it was Ellestad bouncing a two-out, two-run single over the third base bag to increase the lead to 7-0.
Delbrey, who did not allow a single runner past second base the entire game, used the defense of Ellestad to fend off traffic the next two innings – a line-out double play to end CCU's at bat in the third and a foul out in the fourth.
The march toward the early finish immediately followed during the home half of the fourth as Sam Roe's two-run home and Denali Loecker's solo launch (her first homer as a Cajun) put UL into double digits up 10-0.
Roe (2-for-3), Ellestad (2-for-2) and Hayden (2-for-4) also each delivered multiple-hit games. For Roe it was her third three-RBI effort and team-leading seventh multiple-RBI outing. Ellestad collected her second three-RBI effort of the season and third multiple-RBI game in Sun Belt play.
Delbrey (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 K) turned in her longest appearance of the season and pitched Louisiana's fifth shutout.
Louisiana extended its series win streak over Coastal to 14 games dating back to 2020 and improved to 24-2 all-time against the Chanticleers (includes a perfect 11-0 mark at Lamson Park).
