Almendares Named SBC Special Teams Player of the Week for Third Time

Senior kicker five points shy of school's all-time scoring record
LAFAYETTE – After tying a season-high with three field goals and helping Louisiana remain unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play, Ragin' Cajuns kicker Kenneth Almendares earned SBC Special Teams Player of Week honors, the league office announced on Monday.

Almendares, who earned SBC weekly honors for the third time this season, converted on all three field goals and added a pair PATs in leading Louisiana to a 23-17 nationally-televised victory at Texas State on Tuesday.

His 11 points in the game increased his career scoring total to 314 points, moving him past former Ragin' Cajun Stevie Artigue (310, 2015-19) for second place and four points behind Elijah McGuire (318, 2013-16) for the school's all-time lead.

Almendares gave Louisiana a 17-14 lead in the third quarter when he connected on his first field goal – a 42-yard boot into a 19-mile per hour wind. The senior added field goals of 24 and 44 yards in the fourth quarter to increase his SBC-leading total to 79 points on the season.

Almendares improved to 17-for-19 (89.5%) on field goal attempts and 28-for-28 on PATs on the season in helping Louisiana remain the lone unbeaten squad in SBC play.Â

Louisiana (7-1, 4-0 SBC) returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 9) when it faces Arkansas State (5-3, 3-1 SBC) in the annual Homecoming Game at Cajun Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
